www.growinggap.ca is an initiative of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives’ Inequality Project, a national project to increase public awareness about the alarming spread of income and wealth inequality in Canada .

In the past 20 years, Canada has undergone profound changes.  Canada ’s fiscal situation has improved from one of the weakest in the OECD in the 1980s to one of the strongest today.  The rate of unemployment in Canada is lower than it has been in more than a generation.  In spite of these changes — all of which were supposed to ensure greater prosperity for every Canadian — the reports continue to come in indicating the gap between the rich and the poor is greater than it was 20 years ago.

It’s widening despite the fact that Canada ’s economy is firing on all cylinders.  It’s widening despite the fact that the federal government has yielded nine fiscal surpluses in a row.  It’s stubbornly resistant to the factors that would normally improve it — like more Canadians working, and more Canadians working harder.

In short, the rising tide has not lifted all boats.

www.childrenscentre.ca Children’s Centre Thunder Bay exists to improve the mental health of our community and to assist children and families to overcome their difficulties in order that they may live happier, healthier and more productive lives. They provide a diversity of professional counselling programs which meet the changing needs of our community.

Ways To Establish Good Rapport With Customers

By:  Nader Iznait - Technical Consultant for IT, Business Management and Marketing.

Have you ever wondered why some people are more comfortable to be with than others? Well so have a lot of behavioral scientists, and they have discovered a number of specific kinds of behavior that contribute to establishing a personal rapport. Here are some reasons to establish the rapport.
  • Smile sincerely –not false, paste-on smile, but one that starts with your eyes.
  • Keep a relaxed, open stance.
  • Lean slightly toward the customer, being careful not to invade his personal space.
  • Maintain eye contact. You will be considered more confident, honest, and knowledgeable by customers.
  • Occasionally touch the person in a nonthreatening manner.
  • Know the customer’s name and use it when speaking with them.
  • Subtly mirror the customer behavior. Match their rate of breathing; speak at their rate of speech and in their tone of voice. Assume a similar posture and use similar body language. We all relate to those we feel are like us.

Connecting You to a Fit & Healthy Lifestyle

It’s feeling like summer and summer means an abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. The farmer’s market and the fruit stands are open for business!

Well if that’s not enough reason to pick up on your produce, how about this:

Besides the fact that 9 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day offer divine cancer protection, they also,

*      Keep you trim – lots of vegetables have only 50 calories in a whole cup, the same as 5 measly potato chips of a very tiny cookie

*      Protect your heart – antioxidants, soluble fiber and folate in produce are kind to the heart and blood vessels

*      Lower high blood pressure – 8 to 10 servings of fruits and veggies and 2 to 3 servings of dairy reduces moderate high blood pressure as much as medication

*      Stop a stroke – high vegetable and fruit intake can reduce your risk of stroke by 30%

*      Love your eyes – you will have less risk of the two most common causes of adult blindness, macular degeneration and cataracts

*      Wards off diverticulosis – you don’t want to be one of the 3 people who develop this condition over 50! Solution – a diet high in fiber of which fruit and veggies are the top sources

*      Help tame diabetes – fruits and veggies seem to raise blood sugar less that other foods containing carbs

*      Protect your bones – Calcium and vitamin D are crucial, but two studies show that eating lots of fruits and veggies helps too.

*      Provide pure pleasure! There beautiful, vibrant colours just make any dish look more appealing!

While the opportunity it there, make it your goal to get 8 to 10 servings of fresh fruits and veggies everyday! Eat them raw, try some that you have never tried before, be creative and try out a new recipe!

Make it an excellent summer! Get up and get going and walk to the market to pick up your produce!!

E-mails and Business (Continued)

My last two columns note that, in a business environment in which customers and entrepreneurs rarely meet face-to-face, it is important for entrepreneurs to craft their e-mails in ways that allow them to maintain their reputations, credibility, and professionalism; the columns also contain a number of basic rules designed to accomplish this.  These rules included:

  • the maintenance of an air of formality in all e-mails, including personal messages;
  • the use of proper grammar, since grammar comprises a set of rules, which, by their very nature, impose structure, organization, and discipline and, thereby, convey an air of formality; and
  • the use of proper paragraphs, which, when constructed correctly, give the material order.

There are a number of other rules worth following.

4.      Avoid using technical writing devices designed to draw an inordinate amount of attention to your message.  For example, DO NOT WRITE ENTIRE WORDS IN CAPITAL LETTERS.  This practice “MEANS THAT YOU ARE SHOUTING” or has the same impact as shouting.[1]  It not only irritates people, but also makes the e-mail harder to read.[2]  In addition, avoid using large font sizes.  They also have the effect of shouting.  Even more problematic is the practice of WRITING IN CAPITAL LETTERS IN A LARGE FONT SIZE.

5.      Avoid using acronyms.  Do not even use common ones, such as BTW (by the way) or FYI (for your information).[3]  The e-mail recipient who is not familiar with the acronyms will be irritated; acronyms can look like a secret language and, so, for those unfamiliar with them, evoke exclusion.  In addition, acronyms convey an air of familiarity, which is to be avoided in business.  Some acronyms are referred to as emoticons because they are imbued with emotion.  One example is LOL (laugh out loud).  Avoid these, too; be businesslike.[4]  Similarly, avoid ‘smiley faces’.[5]

6.      Use proper salutations and farewells, just as you would in a well-written letter.  Use a salutation or greeting that contains the recipient’s title, and avoid shortening the name; for example, write ‘ Doctor Lois Lake ’, rather than ‘L. Lake’.[6]  Avoid farewells that sound too familiar; instead, use farewells that sound professional, such as ‘Regards’, ‘Best Wishes’, or ‘Sincerely’.[7]

Writing Tip

 Use of capitals with titles:

If the title appears before the person’s name, capitalize that person’s title; if the title appears after the person’s name, do not capitalize it.[8]

For example: Professor Jane Smith or Jane Smith, a professor

Doctor Pamela Jones or Pamela Jones, a doctor

Judge Suzanne Burke or Suzanne Burke, the judge

Learn a New Word

Taciturn: adjective: (pronounced tas-i-turn)

-habitually silent, reserved, uncommunicative, or quiet

For example: In front of an audience, her shy, taciturn manner was transformed; she became the life of the party.
