May 1st & 2nd - Regional Career & Job Fair

Region’s Premier Career and Job Fair Set to Start

The North Superior Training Boards’ fifth annual Regional Career and Job Fair gets underway on Tuesday, May 1st at the Lakehead University Hangar.  Targeted to youth seeking information on career and training options as well as adults looking for employment, including displaced workers, the Fair plays host to more than 7,000 visitors from as far away as Wawa and Red Lake over two days.

Recognized at the region’s premier career planning event, the Fair offers more than 100 exhibits, along with an interactive demonstration area—the Hands-on Zone-- which enables students to work alongside trades people, engineers….and even robots.  A new feature of this year’s Fair, the Zone  promises to be popular.

Also new to the 2007 version of the Fair is a Job Fair from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, May 1st , featuring employers such as Home Depot, Staples, local hotels, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Pioneer Construction.

North Superior Training Board Co-chair (Labour) Francis Bell said that the Job Fair was organized to address a growing need within the community and the region.

“With downsizing and job cutting taking place throughout the region, people who are unemployed or underemployed need to know what their options are.  The Job Fair was developed with this objective in mind.  Through the provision of information on upgrading resources and  the presence of employers who are looking to hire in the short term, the Board is seeking to address the needs of those who are in this difficult situation”, said Bell.

The foundation of the Fair, however, is the massive array of exhibits themselves, encompassing education and training, the skilled trades, the health care sector, hospitality, sales and service, government, professional, information technology and other sectors.

Besides local post-secondary institutions, exhibitors in the training and education area will include Georgian College , the University of Manitoba and the University of Saskatchewan , while the skilled trades area will feature options for a career in trucking, cosmetology, mining, energy and telecommunications.  Those interested in health care will have a wide variety of options to choose from, from a career as a chiropractor to a nurse and from a technician to a physician.

Regional Career and Job Fair 2007 will open at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 1 and will remain open until 4 p.m.   The Fair will close for the Exhibitor Awards dinner from 4-6 p.m. and then will reopen to the public for the Job Fair.  Hours on Wednesday, May 2 will be from 9 a.m.   3:30 p.m.   Refreshments will be available for purchase throughout the two days.  There is no charge to attend the Fair.

Regional Career and Job Fair 2007 is presented by the North Superior Training Board and Employment Ontario.  The Fair’s presenting sponsor is the Chronicle Journal.  Dougall Media and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund are the Fair’s major sponsors and TBayTel and Passport to Prosperity, its supporting sponsors.

Connecting You to a Fit & Healthy Lifestyle

Boo Hoo!! I have the flu!  Now what would I tell YOU to do?
If you’re throat is sore, and you’re coughing and spewing
You’re voice sounds gravelly and you’re nose is running!

Stay home!! Don’t share that stuff!
Pick up a book and give your pillow a fluff!
Drink lots of fluid, green tea is great!
And tell yourself you need this break!

Just cause I’m feeling quite yucky!
Doesn’t mean you get to sit ducky!
Unless you too have the flu!
You know what to do!

Make it a fit and healthy week, wash your hands
and don’t let anyone breathe on you!!

Then get up and get going!!

PS: No audio this week; I sound like Kermit the Frog in puberty!!

PARO Member Sharla Brown is extending an invite to anyone who plans to participate in the 38th Annual Royal LePage Women's United Walk and would like to sign up under the "Fit to Win" Team.

For every 25 people that sign up under the Fit to Win team, Royal LePage will donate $300 to The Canadian Diabetes Foundation towards their fundraising goals for their half-marathons.  Last year Fit to Win won the largest team category with 103 participants and raised $1200 for Team Diabetes.  They hope to surpass that number this year.
