Valhalla Inn, Thunder Bay

Leadership is a Dialogue, Not a Monologue.

This year’s featured speaker, Marion Balla, is President of The Adlerian Counselling and Consulting Group in Ottawa, where she offers presentations and training in Communication, Leadership, and Family issues, amongst many others.

She knows that leadership starts from where you are, right now.  She is a role model, an expert presenter, an approachable communicator, and excited to be asked back to this northern Ontario event.  She will also facilitate an Executive "Think and Do Tank" for experienced leaders.

The energy, enthusiasm and passion that leaders model in their daily communications create movement and momentum towards common goals.  This session will assist participants to examine how their body language, their level of energy and the use of “we” and “our” in interactions play a pivotal role in successful outcomes.  Being understood by others and understanding others in all communications is the essence of strong leadership.

Watch for registration forms on the website: www.womensleadership.ca or call (807) 767-4443 to purchase your ticket.

Connecting You To A Fit And Healthy Lifestyle

Are you feeling “stuffed” after all that Thanksgiving turkey? Well, don’t start thinking that you should be a “loser”!

Have you noticed that DIET is comprised of the word DIE and when someone goes on a Diet they are out to “lose”! Is it just me or does anyone else feel that someone on a DIET out to LOSE is just setting themselves up to FAIL.

It just does not make sense to set goals of “Losing”! Look at the other areas of your life: Do you want your Finances to improve by buying mutual funds, stocks or real estate hoping to lose money? Do you want to create Balance in your life by spending less time going hiking, biking or canoeing? Is talking time away from your Family going to strengthen your relationships? Is losing a client or contract going to improve your chances of getting a raise or promotion at Work? No-no-no-no!

Why is it then, when it comes to embracing a Fit and Healthy lifestyle, so many focus on “losing” instead of “gaining”? First of all, losing weight is very individual and it is very difficult to say how many pounds by what date as we are all so different – so it already does not meet the “Timed” part of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed) goals.

Try taking the opposite approach – set action goals, whether it is an event or a personal goal of being able to walk or jog for 30 minutes, or get to the gym 4 days a week. In the process of training for an event or activity you have always wanted to do, you “GAIN” a fitter body; you are burning more energy and tend to make healthier nutritional choices. It is a positive; and your motivation stays in focus. For example, let’s say you set a goal of finishing a 5km fun run. Setting this kind of goal, because it has a deadline, will provide a compelling reason to stick to your fitness program and not miss workouts. IF you get off track with your training program while preparing for an event, you can’t call a race organizer and ask them to postpone the event because you aren’t going to be ready. Every workout or skipped workout will either positively or negatively affect your performance and your ability to achieve your goal. Action goals also build upon themselves for a lifetime of fitness. Once you complete one – you can set another goal, whether it is a better time in a 5 km race, a longer race, a Triathlon or increasing the intensity of your cardio workout at the gym.

By setting action goals and making healthy nutritional choices in the correct portion and serving sizes; you are a WINNER!! If you enter a 5km fun run, not only are you fitter, healthier and feel like a million bucks  - you have also have the glory of crossing the finish line, a medal and a t-shirt; you have gained one more accomplishment to add to your growing list!

Make it an excellent day! Get up and get going!
