Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

Wouldn’t it be nice if ALL Mondays were spent – on the lake, golfing, gardening, hiking or biking!!

Nutri-Bit

The first long weekend of the “summer” is over! Whether you are trying to shed some of your winter “coat” or just trying to maintain your sleek physique – booze is a buster!

In addition to supplying “empty” calories, another problem that alcohol (spirits, wine, coolers or beer) causes is that since it is absorbed quickly into the blood, blood sugar rises rapidly. To compensate, the body secretes insulin. Insulin is a fat-hoarding compound. It actually makes less fat available for the body to burn as fuel.

So if you feel a little guilt-ridden after gulping down your sixth brew while watching the hockey playoffs -you should!! In the game of losing or keeping fat at bay – you’ve just helped out the competition – you’ve assisted on the goal scored by The Mighty Fats!

Whether your “game” plan is to lose or maintain – remember – moderation and moving are the keys – even on long weekends!!!

Make it an excellent week! Get up and get going!

Northern Opportunities for Women: “NOW”

A Regional Outreach and Awareness Development Initiative

Have you seen our PARO Van in Thunder Bay and in some of the communities in Northwestern Ontario lately?  We’ve been busy making connections and putting women in contact with helpful resources and information.  NOW on the Road will be traveling East this Monday with our NOW Regional Coordinator, Laura Diamond and our Business Councellors; Bobby Jo Chenier and Lisa Thomson to Nipigon, Red Rock, Schreiber and Terrace Bay . Tuesday look for us in Marathon and Manitouwadge.  Wednesday we’ll be in Longlac and Geraldton. We hope to see you whether you are a Circle member or someone who would like information. This is our first time through, so any suggestions you have will be helpful.  Once we have our schedule finalized, we will be listing the venues where you can come and visit us.  Whether you interested in starting a business, need mentoring for your current business or would like information on training opportunities, or some information on social resources of all kinds that are available to you, PARO will be there on a bi-weekly basis. Think of us as the PARO office on wheels.

Our Official Launch and Press Conference for the “Northern Opportunities for Women” or NOW Project went very well today.  It was a fabulous turnout, with special guests Bill Mauro, MPP, who made the official funding announcement, Vera Mannila from the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Gwen Wojda representing North Superior Training Board and Councellor Joe Vander Wees representing The City of Thunder Bay. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who is supporting us and encourage you to watch and listen to the media to see and hear more about it.

If you want to start a PARO Circle , or if you have some ideas on how the NOW project can continue bringing PARO’s services to you locally and regionally, please contact sandraw@paro.ca or ldiamond@paro.ca.

Look at us NOW. We look forward to meeting you!

NOW is a new project at PARO, provided in partnership with the North Superior Training Board and designed to bridge the gap to employment and training for women in the Northwestern Ontario region.  This project is funded by the Trillium Foundation.

Looking For A Home...

Needed:  A good home for an amazing dog

Lincoln is a 2 year old rottweiler who needs a good home since his mother and father have parted ways.  He is loving dog who needs a lot of attention and exercise.

We are pretty sure he is a purebred, but do not have papers, since he was found abandoned.

Serious enquiries only: Please contact Daina daina@drytel.net or 807-221-9802.

Barenaked Babies Update

The Obstetrics Unit at Santa Clara Hospital in Cuba will have its official opening at the beginning of June, with MEMO being present.  It is a small unit of only five cribs for newborns.

We, the "Barenaked Babies" contributed $200 for paint, so all the small cribs, walls etc. are freshly decorated.  We had sufficient monies donated, so we were able to put together a total of forty-eight packages for the newborns.  These consist of 2 diapers, 1 receiving blanket and a night shirt.

I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed to this worthwhile cause.  Anyone who would further like to contribute can drop off monies at PARO Presents Gift Shop or at the PARO Office.

Thank you,

Maggie Milne & Loretta Shymko

Health Minute

Tote that Shrub, Lift that Kale...

If you'd like to build strong bones without joining a gym, consider planting a garden.

In an analysis of several different physical activities, only yard work and weight lifting turned out to be good bone builders. In fact, raking mulch, planting bushes, and pulling weeds -- or doing whatever your green space takes -- were even better for bones than jogging. Researchers suspect that the digging, squatting, lifting, and pushing that yard work entails easily equals a weight workout.

RealAge Benefit: Exercising regularly can make your RealAge as much as 9 years younger.

Weekly Inspiration

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful."

  *Herman Cain

POSITIVE QUOTE : "The title "scholar" suggests that a person has gone to school, and that he studied, but it does not mean that he has acquired any truly important knowledge."

                        George Lichtenberg

DAILY MOTIVATION :  Old age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life, the person I have always wanted to be. Oh, not my body! I sometime despair over my body ... the wrinkles, the baggy eyes, and the sagging butt. And often I am taken aback by that old person that lives in my mirror, but I do not agonize over those things for long.

I would never trade my amazing friends, my wonderful life, my loving family for less gray hair or a flatter belly.  As I have aged, I have become more kind to myself, and less critical of myself. I have become my own friend. I do not chide myself for eating that extra cookie, or for not making my bed, or for buying that silly cement gecko that I did not need, but looks so avante garde on my patio. I am entitled to overeat, to be messy, to be extravagant. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world too soon; before they understood the great freedom that  comes with aging.

Whose business is it if I choose to read or play on the computer until 4 a.m., and sleep until noon?  I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 60's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love... I will.  I will walk the beach in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves with abandon if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the bikini set.

They, too, will get old.

I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten ... and I eventually remember the important things.  Sure, over the years my heart has been broken.  How can your heart not break when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when a beloved pet gets hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength and understanding and compassion. A heart never broken is pristine and sterile and will never know the joy of being imperfect.

I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turn gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. I can say "no", and mean it. I can say "yes", and mean it.

As you get older, it is easier to be positive.  You care less about what other people think.  I do not question myself anymore.
I have even earned the right to be wrong.

So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free.  I like the person I have become.  I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day.

Have an awesome weekend!!!
