bits and Pieces from the Desk of the Executive Director

First Steps to Getting the Contract . . .

Want to know what gets your foot in the door? What sends your resume into the deleted files?  Great proposals, applications, and resumes stand out in the pile of applications.  It's worth the time and energy to produce outstanding documents.  The first step is to update your resume.

Let’s Look at Common Reasons for Rejection . . .

- Your name is missing.  Make sure it is clearly placed on each page. Your name should stand out – consider putting it in a larger font size.

- Missing phone and/or e-mail address, or out of date e-mail address.

- Education category is missing dates, no major and/or degree is listed, the university name is missing, and/or abbreviations are used inappropriately.

- Employment accomplishment statements should be no longer than 4 lines if stated in paragraph format, no dates of employment are listed, no employer names are listed and/or resume does not include accomplishment statements.

- Too long? Your resume should not exceed 3 full pages in length.  A single page resume should be ¾ to 1 whole page in length.

- Hard to read? Fonts should be traditional; do not use italics, script or more than one font on your resume. Avoid fancy fonts.

 - Font size 10-12 is generally acceptable. Anything smaller is hard to read.

- Typos? Check spelling and grammar. Ask someone else to proof-read for you. Do not rely on sprell-cheque.

- The resume should show what you have to offer, NOT what you want to get.

- Avoid over-using "I, me, and my"

- Avoid abbreviations and acronyms – the person reading your resume may not necessarily know what you are referring to.

 - Don’t mention the names of your parents, spouses, relatives and their occupations, (nobody is interested).

 - Don’t “exaggerate” your information in the covering letter or resume. It will be obvious to most readers.

 - Use plain, business-like paper, not patterns or wild colours.  Remember that your resume will most likely be photocopied.

 - Send in the original version, not a poor photocopy. Update to fit this application. Do not submit a resume with coffee stains on the back page!

 - Missing information? Did you read the job ad or request for proposal carefully?  Have you included all requested information?

Employers (and contractors) in essence want to know how hiring you will benefit their business now and in the future. It is very important to research and understand the position for which you are applying.  Employers are busy, so make it easy for them to remember you!

 Hope you get the contract!

Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

Nutri-Bit

“I m never going to eat another pepperoni pizza!” “ I always pig out on chips,” so from now on they are off-limits!”. Sound familiar? Well, if you’re trying to embark on a healthy eating journey that’ll last a lifetime, you’d better ban words like, “never”, “always” and “off-limits” from your vocabulary. These ultimatums put you just a few nibbles away from failure.

That’s the problem with dieting – you’re forced to label certain foods as off-limits or taboo, and then these no-no’s become the foods you desperately crave. When your “diet” is over, you’ll fall back into your old eating habits, gobbling up all the forbidden foods you can get your hands on and then some.

Instead of depriving yourself, follow the “80/20” rule, a more realistic approach to healthy eating: Eighty percent of the time, choose foods that are nutritious, low in fat and high in fiber; twenty percent of the time, allow yourself an indulgence. Keep your day to day eating nutritious, low in fat and sugars. Eat lots of veggies, fruit, whole grains and lower fat protein sources. When you are out for dinner or on special occasions, have what you really like in proper portion sizes. Healthy habits are forever when you learn to never say never!!

Make it an excellent day! Get up and get going!

The Bright Side Wins...

It's not cockeyed to be an optimist. In fact, looking on the bright side can help keep you feeling strong and steady.

One study after another has found that an optimistic attitude can help people avoid illness as they age. But the benefits of an upbeat attitude don't stop there. Even if something bad does happen -- say, a broken hip -- optimists are more likely to bounce back, while others may slide into frailty. So if anyone gives you a hard time about always looking on the bright side, shrug them off. And enjoy the last laugh.

RealAge Benefit: Taking care of your emotional health and well-being can make your RealAge up to 16 years younger.

Weekly Inspiration

POSITIVE QUOTE :  "Intellect is the quality that makes us different from animals."

                                        - Anonymous

DAILY MOTIVATION :  Rules for Being Human...

1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period on earth.  But, it can become a Temple of God.

2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.

3. There are mistakes as well as lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error, experimentation. The "failed" experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately "works."

4. A lesson is repeated until learned. A lessons will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go to the next lesson.

5. Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

6. "There" is no better than "here."  When you are "there" has become a "here" you will simply obtain another "there" that will again, look better than "here."

7. Others can be mirrors for you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

8. What you do with your life is up to you. You have opportunities, tools and resources God has given you.  What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.
