The Accelerator

Need The Patch?

Who knew that a social activist in the healthcare system was just an ordinary guy with an interest in clowning and medicine.  You know the movie with Robin Williams?  Dr Adams will be Keynoting in Toronto at the Holistic World Expo (www.holisticworld.org) in March.  A link from that announcement takes us to his website.  It's not his fame that brings about change -  it's his actions.  And yours.  Social change - as we also prescribe with The Accelerator - begins with our intentions.  Funny how we change ourselves in the process!

Patch's Prescription: 10 Everyday Actions

Prescriptive Inspiration

1. Pick up all the trash in an area in your hometown; be its guardian. Tell others about it.
2. Be friendly to everyone at all times; experiment outrageously.
3. Offer a shoulder or foot rub in any environment.
4. Always speak up for justice, no matter how much it costs.
5. Go once a week on a "house call" to a nursing home to cheer people up as a friend.
6. Turn off your TV and become interesting. Perform yourself.
7. Consider being silly in public. Sing out loud. Wear funny stuff.
8. Find ways to need a whole lot less money; share beyond belief.
9. Have potlucks frequently, with neighbors, co-workers, strangers. Work toward living in extended families.
10. Take your vacations in your own hometown and spend the money working on projects there that help build community.

Are you ready to build a more holistic business?  If you are a woman already in business in northern Ontario, and are committed to growth and research, ask for an Accelerator application form.

Call 807 625 0328 or maggiem@paro.ca.  Join 38 other women from the Region and Thunder Bay - some specializing in Holistic medicine -  in your pursuit of a sustainable livelihood!

A Business Expansion...

Steeper’s is thrilled to announce the grand opening of their second location at 89 North Cumberland Street (beside McDonalds)!  Customers are invited to drop by and browse throughout the store, explore over 70 varieties of loose leaf teas and enjoy the comfortable shopping atmosphere at Steeper’s!

Customers can expect to find a large selection of whole leaf tea, accessories and a Tea To Go service.  Steeper’s only carries the best quality tea, passing along the best tasting beverage to their customers every day.   Steeper’s sells full-leaf tea because it's simply better tasting and much more diverse in its range of subtle flavors than the cut leaves or tea dust you will find in most tea bags. And brewing fresh whole leaves is as easy as boiling water.

Colleen & Jason have completely renovated both their locations be bright, spacious and relaxing.  “We have totally renovated, merchandised and accessorized our stores to provide an exciting place to shop for tea in Thunder Bay ”.  We are able to bring the best quality, selection and service to our customers.

Don’t forget you can also find them at 122 May Street North.  Look for www.steeperstea.com coming soon!!

Tax Tips

Automobile Expense –

If you use your personal vehicle for business purposes and you wish to claim some of the costs of running your vehicle as a business expense you must be able to justify theses expenses with a log book.  Log your mileage each time you use your vehicle for business purposes and at the end of the year compare business mileage to total mileage.  Keep all of your receipts and your logs for seven years.

Line 9945 - Business-use-of-home expenses
You can deduct expenses for the business use of a work space in your home, as long as you meet one of these conditions:
· it is your principal place of business; or
· you use the space only to earn your business income, and you use it on a regular and ongoing basis to meet your clients, customers, or patients.
You can deduct a part of your  heating, home insurance, electricity, cleaning materials, property taxes, mortgage interest, and capital cost allowance. To calculate the part you can deduct, use a reasonable basis such as the area of the work space divided by the total area of your home.
The key to office in home expense is that you use that portion of your home exclusively for business purposes
If you are using that portion of your home for business and personal use, contact a Revenue Canada Agent, explain your circumstances and determine whether or not you have a ligitimate expense
see Interpretation Bulletin IT-514, Work space in home expenses.

Key note for Shaping Public Policy The Women's Agenda Forum Vancouver

In September 2002 noted economist Armine Yalnizyan received the first ever Economic Justice Award to embark on a three-year research program, beginning with a special focus on Canada's medicare system. The award is providing an important opportunity for Ms. Yalnizyan to explore two themes: universality and the role of the nation state. This work, focussed on the financing of public health care, is being published through the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.

Ms. Yalnizyan has a long history working with others to put the public into public policy. As a economist, she has focussed on the economic fundamentals that change people's lives. Her ability to offer fiscal and economic analysis as well as achievable strategies for action has earned her wide respect as a researcher, communicator and teacher.

Ms. Yalnizyan worked at the Social Planning Council of Metropolitan Toronto from 1987 to 1997. She has been co-chair of the Economy and Employment Committee of the National Action Committee on the Status of Woman. She is the founding member of the Progressive Economics Forum, co-chair of the Ontario Alternative Budget, board member of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre and a greateful member of the United Church of Canada.

In 1998 she authoured a ground-breaking report, The Great Divide, the politics of the growing gap between rich and poor in the 1990s. To download a copy of this report, go to our Publications Page.

Ms. Yalnizyan deeply believes in the power of informed public discourse.

This page will highlight the work that Armine Yalnizyan is doing as she continues her important work on policy issues related to public health care.

On May 20, 2003 Ms. Yalnizyan gave a speech "Will Community Voices Shape Public Choices?

On January 26, 2004 Ms. Yalnizyan and Trish Hennessy penned an Opinion  Editorial for the Toronto Star.  Fixing Health Care: We need a dose of Dr. Phil.

On February 3, 2005, Ms. Yalnizian authored Ten Years of Federal Budgets: Double Whammy for Women for the Canadian Feminist Alliance for International Action.  The report, first ever analysis of federal budgets on Canadian women, shows that Federal fiscal choices have done little to improve most women's economic security over the last 10 years.

To gain a better understanding of the Northwestern Ontario tourism industry's marketing strategies, Lakehead University has produced an industry survey. This survey seeks to identify the industry's perceptions and understanding of their market segments and their current marketing and promotion strategies.

This survey will help the tourism industry in Northwestern Ontario identify where marketing efforts are currently directed. This baseline data must be identified before the industry's marketing efforts can be evaluated.

Your assistance in collecting this data will be greatly appreciated and your business will be entered in a draw to win a $100.00 gift certificate to a Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce member of your choice!

Please click on the link to access the survey online.  www.insitefulsurveys.com/survey.asp?SI=993568711300

Thank you so much for your assistance in gathering this industry research.

Failure is only postponed success as long as courage "coaches"  ambition. The habit of persistence is the habit of victory."

TWO FRIENDS WERE WALKING THROUGH THE DESERT

DURING SOME POINT OF THE JOURNEY THEY HAD AN ARGUMENT AND ONE FRIEND SLAPPED THE OTHER ONE IN THE FACE.
THE ONE WHO GOT SLAPPED WAS HURT, BUT WITHOUT SAYING ANYTHING, WROTE IN THE SAND:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE.

THEY KEPT ON WALKING, UNTIL THEY FOUND AN OASIS, WHERE THEY DECIDED TO TAKE A BATH.

THE ONE WHO HAD BEEN SLAPPED GOT STUCK IN THE MIRE AND STARTED DROWNING, BUT THE FRIEND SAVED HIM.

AFTER HE RECOVERED FROM THE NEAR DROWNING, HE WROTE ON A STONE:

TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE.

THE FRIEND WHO HAD SLAPPED AND SAVED HIS BEST FRIEND ASKED HIM, "AFTER I HURT YOU, YOU WROTE IN THE SAND AND NOW, YOU WRITE ON A STONE, WHY?"

THE OTHER FRIEND REPLIED "WHEN SOMEONE HURTS! US WE SHOULD WRITE IT DOWN IN SAND WHERE WINDS OF FORGIVENESS CAN ERASE IT AWAY.  BUT, WHEN SOMEONE DOES SOMETHING GOOD FOR US, WE MUST ENGRAVE IT IN STONE  WHERE NO WIND CAN EVER ERASE IT."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

THEY SAY IT TAKES A MINUTE TO FIND A SPECIAL PERSON, AN HOUR TO APPRECIATE THEM, A DAY TO LOVE THEM, BUT THEN  AN ENTIRE LIFE TO FORGET THEM.

Until next week, have a great weekend!!
