Northern Opportunities for Women: "NOW" A Regional Outreach and Awareness Development Initiative

Last week we were very excited about our first FREE WORKSHOPS on our Eastern Route on  June 20thst  and June  21st.  PARO on Wheels with our experts from PARO’s Women’s Enterprise Centre (WEC) was delighted with the turnout and our team is  looking forward to further expanding our services with your input..

Thanks to Levina Collins in Nipigon for donating the book “Paddle-to-the-Sea” to the PARO Centre Library. Nipigon is hoping to secure funding for a local educational water park based on this 1940 book – Best of Luck!

A two hour workshop in Marathon was held at the Job Connect office on June 20th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Thanks to Alma Wells and the staff for partnering with us on this venture. Five women attended the session that included an introduction to PARO and our programs, a marketing session by Deb Poole-Hoffman, and a bookkeeping session by Karen Rogowski.

A two hour workshop in Geraldton was held at the Economic Development Corporation Office on June 21st from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Thanks to Joelle Laplante and Sylvie Goulet for partnering with us on this venture. Six participants attended the session that included an introduction to PARO and our programs, a marketing session by Deb Poole-Hoffman, and a bookkeeping session by Karen Rogowski.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank CFNO FM radio and our partners and businesses in the communities, for their support in helping us promote these workshops.

The workshops were very successful and we thank all who attended and participated. You make these programs successful and are our Champions. Please pass the word along to all you know, so they too can take advantage of what PARO has to offer. Lisa Thomson will be personally contacting our participants to find out what other facets of business, training, social supports or individual counseling PARO can bring to the region. We look forward to input from all women in Northwestern Ontario so we can meet your needs.

On the next trip west on July 4th we are tentatively planning on delivering orientation on “Exploring Your Entrepreneurial Potential” workshops in Kenora and Atikokan. We will be promoting the specifics soon, so watch for posters in your region or contact either Laura Diamond, NOW Regional Coordinator at ldiamond@paro.ca or Sandra Wiggins, NOW Project Coordinator at sandraw@paro.ca.

Look at us NOW. We look forward to meeting you!

NOW is a new project at PARO, provided in partnership with the North Superior Training Board and designed to bridge the gap to employment and training for women in the Northwestern Ontario region.  This project is funded by the Trillium Foundation.

Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

A woman says to her husband “Honey, can I make you some breakfast? Eggs, toast?”

Her husband replies, “You know, since I started taking this Viagra, I have no appetite, thank you, but I’m just not hungry right now.”

At lunch time she asks him again “Would you like a sandwich or salad?”

“No thank you” he says “this Viagra has really decreased my appetite”.

At suppertime, she says “How about some chicken for dinner”.

“Honestly” he says “I just can’t believe how this Viagra has decreased my appetite – I am just not hungry!”

“Well honey” she says “would you mind getting off me now, I’m starving!”

I was fortunate enough to have my Dad here with us this Father’s day! He told us this joke and we laughed and laughed. I am so grateful to my Dad – for giving me the ability to value laughter, whether at a good joke or at myself. Nothing puts life into perspective more quickly than seeing the absurdity in it.

Have you noticed how serious most people are these days? The pessimists say our world is falling apart, and they complain that it’s no laughing matter. Speaker and comedian Loretta LaRoche has a different point of view.

“We know suffering is part of living and we need help to endure it. Resiliency comes from understanding that there are always times when we can laugh, have fun and be grateful for what we have. We don’t have to wait. Laughter is medicine for our souls. Just as we need food to sustain our body, we need laughter to soothe the soul.”

We need to laugh. It’s nourishing and promotes better health. Studies have shown that laughing lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, and boosts immune function by raising levels of infection-fighting T-cells, disease-fighting proteins called Gamma-interferon and B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies. Laughter also triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, and produces a general sense of well-being.

Make it an excellent week! Laugh a lot and Get up and get going!

Make Some Rich and Powerful Friends...

Start with your grocery store's produce manager.

Not only will he give you a heads-up about the special on kiwis and help you pick the ripest melons, he also can introduce you to his rich and powerful friends. He knows all the colorful fruits and veggies that are rich in carotenoids -- those brilliant red, yellow, and orange pigments with potent disease-fighting properties. These antioxidant compounds can help cool the inflammation in your body that, among other things, contributes to heart and blood vessel disease.

RealAge Benefit: Getting the right amount of protective antioxidants -- including carotenoids -- through food or supplements can make your RealAge 6 years younger.
