Northern Opportunities for Women: "NOW" A Regional Outreach and Awareness Development Initiative

WE ARE ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

June 21st  and 22nd , PARO on Wheels will be presenting FREE WORKSHOPS for women who are in business or thinking about starting a business, as we travel our Eastern route. During our last few trips through the region, women asked for some specific training and information, so we are bringing several experts in their fields to present practical, useful information on;

·          Marketing on a Shoestring

·          Bookkeeping Essentials for Small to Medium Business Owners

·          An Overview of PARO’s Services and Resources for Women

These sessions will also provide a forum for valuable networking opportunities.

We will be in Marathon on Tuesday, June 21st, presenting the first workshop from 6PM-8PM . We’re still firming up the place, so set aside the time right now. The place is still to be confirmed, but it will be easily accessible. Be on the lookout for posters around town with where it will be held. If you don’t see them, contact Sandra Wiggins here at PARO at sandraw@paro.ca  or call us at 1-800-584-0252 and we’ll have the details by Monday afternoon.

Be one of our Champions! Tell women you know who are in business, or thinking about it, about PARO and our workshops, and encourage them come out and hear what PARO can do for them!

The second workshop will be in  Geraldton on Wednesday, June 22nd  from 6pm-8pm at the Greenstone Economic Development Office. You can sign up at the Greenstone Economic Development Office or call them at (807)-854-2273. Remember, these workshops are FREE and drop ins are welcome.

This week, your Northern Opportunities for Women representative, Sandra Wiggins, attended The Network for Women Entrepreneurs Workshop held at the Valhalla Inn. We were happy to see many PARO associates participating. Some of the topics discussed were: Essential Relationship Building Skills, Understanding the Difference Between Relationships and Transactions and Thinking Consciously About Developing Business Networks. We have a binder with printed material from the Network for Women Entrepreneurs here at the office for you to have a look at, or you can access more information at: http://www.cobsc.org/nwe.

Stay tuned for more information on PARO on Wheels’ upcoming Workshops in the region and sessions of interest to women in, or thinking about starting a business. We are always looking for your input, so please email Laura Diamond at ldiamond@paro.ca or Sandra Wiggins at sandraw@paro.ca.

Look at us NOW. We look forward to meeting you!

NOW is a new project at PARO, provided in partnership with the North Superior Training Board and designed to bridge the gap to employment and training for women in the Northwestern Ontario region.  This project is funded by the Trillium Foundation.

Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

There is no magic!!! The only people that “diets” work for – are the authors and publishers who make fortune$$$$ off consumers looking for the “diet” book that is finally going to be “the one”.

The bottom line is: Energy in – Energy out! If you eat more than you expend by being active……guess what? You are going to gain weightL

Use the KISS (Keep it Simple Sally or Sam) method! Post the “FREE” Canada ’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating on your fridge – and make your nutritional choices from the guide. Just remember – unless you are training for an ultra marathon – you probably don’t need the maximum servings on the chart. Assess your individual needs (activity level, size and age) and choose the number of servings that will work for you.

The best part is J – it’s good for you, it’s good for your partner, it’s good for your kids – no special meals because you are on “the diet” that no one else will eat!! If you are having the correct number of servings of grain, veggies, fruit, dairy and meat/alternatives – there is very little room to munch on the items that are NOT in the guide (you know…the 4 c’s, cookies, cake, chips and chocolate)!!

Now keep your money in your pocket and quit contributing to “their” success! I have attached your FREE guide – follow it, be active and you will contribute to your SUCCESS!

Make it an excellent week! Get up and get going!

A Berry Good Thing...

Tempted to go overboard on fresh strawberries? Go ahead.

It's peak season, so they're cheap, juicy, abundant, and one of the healthiest fruits around. A string of recent studies credit strawberries with helping to smack down the effects of bad LDL cholesterol, inhibit disease-fueling inflammation, fight the development of cancer, and even benefit the aging brain. Whew! All that and irresistible flavor.

RealAge Benefit: Eating a diverse diet that includes 4 servings of fruit per day can make your RealAge as much as 4 years younger.

The Story of Father's Day...

The creation of a national day for Dads began back in the 1900s when a grateful daughter wanted to express her deep appreciation for her own father. A gentleman by the name of William Smart, a civil war veteran, was widowed when his wife died in childbirth. Mr. Smart raised his six children on a rural farm in eastern Washington State. When Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, one of Mr. Smart's children, was grown she wanted to show her appreciation for her father. He had shown her a great love and strength in raising her and her siblings as a single parent. So, in 1909, she proposed a day to honor her father in June (the month of her father's birth).

The very first Fathers' Day followed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge showed support of this becoming a national holiday. However, it wasn't until 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson officially proclaimed Fathers' Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June.

Harry C. Meek, president of the Lions Club in Chicago, was also a component in establishing Fathers' Day. He gave several speeches around the United States expressing the need for a day to honor our fathers. In 1920 the Lions Clubs of America presented him with a gold watch, with the inscription "Originator of Fathers' Day".

What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

Happy Father's Day to all!!!
