Northern Opportunities for Women: "NOW" A Regional Outreach and Awareness Development Initiative

This week, Laura Diamond, PARO’s Regional Development Coordinator of the Northern Opportunities for Women project (NOW on the Road) traveled East, with our Women’s Enterprise Centre Business Counselors to Nipigon, Red Rock, Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Marathon, Manitouwadge, Longlac and Geraldton. It was an interesting partnership building, and information gathering experience. We look forward to the next PARO on Wheels trip which will be June 6th and 7th to Atikokan, Fort Frances , Kenora and Dryden.  More details coming soon!

A big thank you to all who came out and supported our Official Launch and Press Conference for the “Northern Opportunities for Women” or NOW Project last Friday. As the pictures show, it was a huge success.

On Wednesday, your NOW representative attended an “Income Security Reform Workshop” hosted by the Income Security Advocacy Centre and the Thunder Bay Economic Justice Committee. Several models that are being considered for proposal to the new Minister of Community and Social Services, Madeleine Meilleur, were discussed. Ms. Meilleur has indicated that reforming social assistance will be one of her first priorities.  Subject matter included: political context for First Nations, how the proposed Child Benefit should be delivered and identifying core principles to be used to evaluate the reform proposals.  The group was very involved and came up with some proactive suggestions that the organizers will be considering when approaching the issue.  We’ll keep you posted on how these new reforms may affect women and their families and how you can become involved. For some background information you can go to www.omssa.com or www.dailybread.ca. The website www.torontoalliance.ca also has information.  Look for the MISWAA Report.

If you want to start a PARO Circle , or if you have some ideas on how the NOW project can continue bringing PARO’s services to you locally and regionally, please contact sandraw@paro.ca or ldiamond@paro.ca.

Look at us NOW. We look forward to meeting you!

NOW is a new project at PARO, provided in partnership with the North Superior Training Board and designed to bridge the gap to employment and training for women in the Northwestern Ontario region.  This project is funded by the Trillium Foundation.

Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

Whether you look at clocks, calendars or hourglasses, time doesn’t stop. It ticks and tocks at the same pace day after day, minute after minute, second after second . Everyone ages at the same rate with birthdays every year – that’s your calendar age. But you have the power to turn your clock faster or slower with the lifestyle choices your make regarding what you do with your body and what you put into it.

For example, a fifty year old who douses his lungs with nicotine and builds his food pyramid with chopped liver and sausage actually may have the body a sixty-five year because of the destruction he is doing. While a fifty year old who eats well, stays away from toxins, and takes care of her body with moderate physical activity could have the body of a 36 year old.

To show you the power you have, consider this: You control more that 70 percent of how well and how long your live. By the time you reach 50, your lifestyle dictates 80 percent of how you age; the rest is controlled by inherited genetics. - You: The Owner’s Manual

How are you controlling your 70 percent?

Make it an excellent week!! Get up and get going!

Bits and Pieces From the Desk of the Executive Director

I have always believed that, you can have anything you want out of life, but first you must know what you want.  During the summer, when you are relaxed and taking a break, it is a good time to think about what you want.

Then, the next step is to set some goals.

“A goal is an objective, a purpose. A goal is more than a dream; it’s a dream being acted upon. A goal is more than a hazy “Oh, I wish I could . . . A goal is clear . . . This is what I am working toward.”- David J. Schwartz, The Magic of Thinking Big.

Examples of possible goals- some are personal, but all will impact your success:

  • Maintain a positive attitude

  • Expect the best in all situations

  • Read a self-improvement book each month

  • Increase confidence by speaking at events

  • Eat six small meals a day

  • Eat daily multivitamins

  • Spend a weekend this month to enjoy nature

  • Learn to play a musical instrument

  • Invest in training to increase my business skills

  • Call on 20% more customers a week

  • Follow up sales with thank you notes

  • Save 10% of my income

  • Increase business revenues by 10% this year

  • Connect with one person each month to help further my business connections

I would love to hear what goals you have set, and how successful you were on carrying them out.

20/20 Summer Salad...

Long, sunny days are blissful for the soul but so-so for your sight.

The problem isn't just the squinting and headaches caused by sun glare; it's the deeper-down damage ultraviolet light can do to the retina and lens. The remedy: wearing sunglasses more often than a rock star, and making crunchy green salads a staple. Why? Bushels of green veggies -- zucchini, spinach, broccoli, kale, romaine, and collard greens -- are loaded with lutein and zeaxanthin, the nutrient combo that's become famous for being a vision saver.

Weekly Inspiration

Boldly explore your dreams

As we grow older, we reflect upon our lives—the things that we have done and the things we didn't do. Don't let this happen     to you! What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Imagine the difference this could make in your life. Imagine how fearlessly you would march into that delivery room! Break the habits of fear that are holding you back and forget the hundreds   of distractions that seem to justify not trying new things! Achieve your dreams, take risks, build your vision and go boldly   towards it.

Source:  Babyfit.com

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.                  So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

- Mark Twain, American writer

There once was a woman who woke up one morning, looked in the mirror, and noticed she had only three hairs on her head.

"Well," she said, "I think I'll braid my hair today."? So she did and she had a wonderful day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and saw that she had only two hairs on her head.

"H-M-M, " she said, "I think I'll part my hair down the middle today."? So she did and she had a grand day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that she had only one hair on her head.

"Well," she said, "Today I'm going to wear my hair in a pony tail." So she did and she had a fun, fun day.

The next day she woke up, looked in the mirror and noticed that there wasn't a single hair on her head.

"YEAH!" she exclaimed, "I don't have to fix my hair today!"

 Attitude is everything.

 Have a Good Day!
Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle!

Have an groovy weekend!!!
