Bits and pieces

From the Desk of the executive Director

To Buy, or not to Buy?

Have you ever wondered why consumers purchase a service or product from your business?

First of all, people buy to fulfill their basic needs.  People purchase to fulfill their physical needs first (like food, water, shelter) then buy to fulfill their safety needs (like locks on the door, etc.) The product or services must be a benefit.

But there are other factors that influence people to purchase services or products of your business, and how much money they will spend.  These factors provide you with the most opportunity to impact their decisions.

The 4 P's of Marketing:  Commonly-known marketing influences are the "4 P's of Marketing" including product, price, place, and promotion.  You can sell "soup" for a $1.50 a cup at a small fast food diner, or the same "soup" with an exotic name at an upscale restaurant for $8.00 with the right mix of the 4 P's.

Perception:  How the customer perceives the product or your services or the business, store, or restaurant impacts their motivation to purchase.  The perception of a product described on a menu at an upscale restaurant id different then from the same soup listed on the message board at a fast food diner counter.

Word of Mouth:  What are people saying about your business, product or service?  Who is talking about your product, and how you provide service to your clientele?  Who are you targeting to purchase your product or service?  How can you influence people to encourage others to purchase your product?  Taking time to do your very best for each customer is very important; they are your best source of advertising and they will be 80% of your business as "regular purchasers".

Physical Factors:  Is it easy for people to access your services or product?  Can potential customers find your telephone number or business location? Do you answer your telephone or return messages promptly; is it easy for people to navigate your website? Are you and/or your staff upbeat and helpful? Are you too pushy? Can people read your labels? How about your signage or packaging? These areas provide constant care and improvement.

You may not have a lot of say over a person’s basic needs, but you can make an impact on the other factors that influence whether they will buy your product or service, whether or not they will tell others good things about your business, and whether they will return to purchase again.  To buy or not to buy?- What are you doing to help people say, “Yes, I will buy.”

While you are relaxing with cool lemonade this summer, consider how you can improve in these areas.

Thinking of you,

Roz

Northern Opportunities for Women: "NOW" A Regional Outreach and Awareness Development Initiative

PARO on Wheels  has just returned from a well attended, successful workshop in Terrace Bay . A sincere thank-you to our partners at Superior North Community Futures Development Corporation for their participation and support.  We received excellent feedback and suggestions for other workshops from the Women in Terrace Bay and area, but welcome your suggestions anytime.

Topics covered in the workshop on July 18th, included how to handle personal and business credit and debt, plus information on bookkeeping for a business.  A short presentation about PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise explained how Women in Northern Ontario can access our services and resources. These services include how to develop an idea into a business plan, or if you already have a started your business, training to help manage or accelerate your business growth. PARO on Wheels also brings you support services through our “NOW” program, and links you with other supportive organizations, groups and individuals to help you in your personal life.

Special thanks go out to all the organizations and businesses who helped promote the PARO on Wheels workshops by including us on their event calendars and by posting our “Business Works!” posters. As we continue to visit communities in Northern Ontario , we are working together with regional partners to  help boost the economy by providing people with the tools they need to succeed financially, and that helps everybody, so we’ll be looking for your support again.

Our next Easterly route trip will be August 22 through 24th,  in the communities of Nipigon, Red Rock, Schreiber, Terrace Bay, Marathon, Manitouwadge, Longlac and Geraldton.  All sessions are open to surrounding communities, and we encourage you to tell others about the PARO sessions and to bring a friend.

On Tuesday, August 8th, PARO on Wheels Business Experts are scheduled for individual counseling sessions in Sioux Lookout, Dryden, Kenora, and Fort Frances . We will, also, meet with some of our Partners and service providers.

Thursday, August 10th from 11:30AM until 1:30PM is “OPEN ACCESS” scheduled for Atikokan, and offers Women confidential counseling sessions on business topics.

If you would like to speak to one of our business experts, one on one, during this “OPEN ACCESS” session, please contact Lisa Thomson at lthomson@paro.ca , 807-625-0328 or call her toll free at 1-800-584-0252 to make an appointment.  Do you have products that you would like to market in the PARO Presents store or do you have questions about PARO services and programs? You are invited to drop by and meet our summer intern, Isabel, who can answer your general questions about PARO and PARO Presents store.

Our philosophy at PARO is based on a holistic approach. Social and personal activities are good for the mind and spirit.  July 26 – 29th,  consider attending  “Flames of Fire!” an exciting Music and Arts Conference for the young and young at heart. Dynamic workshops and fun outdoor activities are planned. Contact Grace Christian Centre, Elliott Lake 705-848-1249 for more info. It may be the highlight of your summer!

Congratulations to our newest Peer Lending Circle “Elements of Balance”. These circles are a unique way for Women to attain micro business loans, in stages, to help them as they grow their business. The Networking aspect is an integral part of the Circle concept.

For more information on the upcoming workshops or if you have input to help us meet your needs, please contact Bobby Jo Chenier , bobbyjo@paro.ca, specializing in Business Development from the idea stage, business plans, and financing; Debbie Squier-Bernst , debbiesb@paro.ca, specializing in credit and debt counseling and other money management issues; and Deborah Poole-Hofmann specializing in marketing, who can be contacted at the PARO office; Sandra Wiggins, Northern Opportunities for Women Project Coordinator at sandraw@paro.ca ; or Laura Diamond, ldiamond@paro.ca, Regional Development Assistant; Frances Talarico, francest@paro.ca, Program Administrator.

Women Helping women

Women Helping Women

Here’s an article that came across my desk, which relates to something I said earlier this month.  It deals with how you relate to members of your family and how they relate to you and others. I think we all know that we are products of our families, not to mention our environment. I thought this might be “food for thought” and give you something to mull over as you get together with family members for summer reunions or special occasions.  Most of us are forgiving of our family members, however, it doesn’t hurt to figure out what makes some people “tick” or  “Why we act the way we do!”

Remember we all have feelings and we have all figured out some way or other to prevent our feelings from being hurt, such as, sometimes, we are defensive without having any reason to act that way. Other people can’t listen to another person but spend their whole time thinking up what they are going to say next, (as soon as they get a chance to talk.) Here’s a few ways that some people choose to protect themselves.  See if you can spot yourself!

SUPERACHIEVER

Brings glory to everyone by doing well.  Whizkid.  Perfectionist.

HERO

Always in the limelight.  Looks wonderful.  Beyond reproach.

“GOOD” KID

Quiet, Perfect.  “Brown noser.”  Doesn’t rock the boat.  Nearly invisible.

PEOPLE PLEASER

Bends over backward to keep everyone happy.  Anticipates other’s needs.

CHEERLEADER

Always positive and upbeat.  Refuses to acknowledge conflict or problems.

VICTIM

Acts helpless.  Easily hurt by others.  Whines and blames.

RESCUER

Always on the lookout for someone to save.  Go-gooder.

PERSECUTOR

Exerts power over others often inflicting pain.  Dumps the problem on others.

REBEL

Challenges authority and the status quo.  Always plays devil’s advocate.

SCAPEGOAT

Assumes blame for the problem.

“BAD” KID

Breaks the rules.  Acts out negatively.  Troublemaker.

MASCOT

Everyone’s darling or pet.  A charmer who doesn’t have to be responsible.

CLOWN

Uses humour to dispel tension or distract others from conflict or problems.

MARTYR

Absorbs pain like a sponge.  Takes on the problems of the system.  Suffers with or without complaining.

CAREGIVER

Focuses on solving others’ problems while ignoring own.  Mother hen..

TYRANT

Uses power to coerce others to do what the tyrant wants regardless of the effects

If you are looking for someplace special………..

We were looking for something special.  After hemming and hawing we settled on Rose Valley Lodge.  The restaurant can be found a few clicks off  Hwy 61.  A bit of a drive but we thought it would be worth it.  It was.

It was spectacular dinner……… not only was the food spectacular – it’s was surprising.  Stinging nettle soup, greens with balsamic vinegar, spinach ravioli and stuffed chicken breast.  I have been in a many good restaurants in many cities – this one was very good.   And as you enjoy your meal – the view of the meadow around you is enchanting.   Definitely worth the experience.

Sincerely,

Teresa Kelly

Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

Wow! Two weeks of sunshine, heat and the lake – I am counting my lucky stars!!

You can look all you like but if you are waiting to FIND the time to fit in your fitness program – you are going to have a long wait! You probably will never find the time, you really have to MAKE the time!

Here are some ways to MAKE the time!

JUST DO IT - EARLY!  The only one stopping you from dragging you out of bed 30 to 45 minutes earlier than you are right now is YOU If you wait until later in the day – it won’t be just you, you may have a line-up of people and chores who are vying for your time.  The night before, plan your breakfast, make your lunch and put your workout clothes and runner’s right beside your bed. If you have to step on them or trip over them to get to the bathroom, chances are you will stay up to do your workout!

PUT YOU IN YOUR DAY TIMER! For goodness sakes, you put everything and everyone else in there – why not YOU!! If you use a Palm or Blackberry – you can even have it buzz at you – to get up and get going! Enough said!

QUIT FEELING GUILTY! Of course your spouse, kids, boss, parent, friend and on and on and on…… need you – but guess what!  You will be a much healthier, fitter and happier person, to all those people, if you make the time to look after yourself first! You will never be sorry that you did your workout – but many times you will kick yourself for not doing it – especially if you give yourself the opportunity to blame someone else – because they “needed” you!

Remember – there are NO EXCUSES – ONLY SOLUTIONS!

So make it an excellent week!! Get up and get going!!

Aboriginal Women on the Move –

Cross Canada Cycle Tour 2006 to Reach St. John’s, NFLD on August 11th

Aboriginal women on the move try to find locally based solutions to end violence against women

There is still time for you to join in this effort!

On July 17th, three extraordinary women rode into Ottawa after bicycling over 4000 kilometres since early June from Vancouver, British Columbia.  Along the way, they have encountered blistering heat, violent winds and rain, highway traffic at breakneck speeds, and occasionally curious wildlife.

These three women, Sheila Swasson, Chi Metallic-Larocque and Donna Martin-Metallic, are Mi'gmaq First Nation and mothers. They are cycling across Canada to raise awareness and bring attention to family violence in Aboriginal communities and violence against Aboriginal women.

To find out if these fabulous women will stop in a community near you, please visit: http://www.aboriginalwomenonthemove.org/TourDates.html.  If so, we encourage you to welcome them and learn from their journey.  You can also demonstrate your support by sending emails and/or letters, visiting the Aboriginal Women on the Move website, sharing this information and/or by making a donation to your local women’s shelter.

The Hard Facts: Violence against Women in Canada

  • 51% of women in Canada have experienced at least one violence incident as defined by the criminal code.
  • 1 in 10 women are victims of violence
  • Women between the ages of 25-34 have the highest rate of spousal abuse.
  • 1 in 4 women seeking care in the emergency room for any reason is a victim of violence (Source: Canadian Women's Foundation: www.cdnwomen.org)

Each year Canada ’s music festivals involve approximately 230 local music festivals, 696,000 participants, 900 adjudicators, 18,000 volunteers and tens of thousands of audience members.  This country-wide activity peaks with the National Music Festival held every August since 1972.  More than 70 young competitors from all 10 provinces meet for 3 days of competition and workshops with 7 internationally renowned adjudicators.  The culmination is the Grand Award Competition Concert.  There are seven divisions open to participants: Voice, Piano, Strings, Classical Guitar, Brass, Woodwind and Chamber music group.

The National Music Festival is unique in Canada and attracts the best non-professional emerging Classical young musicians from every province.  It encourages the development of classical music in Canada through competition, education, workshop style adjudication and scholarships.  Many students of the music festivals in Canada have gone on to successful careers as performers, teachers and adjudicators.  Alumni of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals include: Leona Boyd, Glenn Gould, Diana Krall, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell and Anne Murray.

The Lakehead Festival of Music and the Arts, a non-profit Charitable organization has been awarded the honour of hosting the 2006 Federation of Canadian Music Festivals competition.  This is a one time monumental project for us. This event will take place at Lakehead University and the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium August 4-6, 2006.  The competitions at Lakehead University  run August 4, and 5 beginning  at 9 am and run throughout the afternoon and evening.  Admission tickets ($5) can be purchased in the Music Deptartment front lobby on the day of competition.  The Grand Award Competition will be held at the Thunder Bay Community Auditorium Sunday August 6th beginning at 7:30 pm.  Tickets are on sale at the Auditorium Box Office ($25 for adults, $20 for students).
These performances will be the best Canada has to offer in Classical music.

We will be promoting tourism destinations such as Fort William Historical Park , the Amethyst mines, Lake Superior tours and parks, Kakabeka Falls , our new Charity Casino, as well as use of local hotels and restaurants.  We will attract many visitors from outside the Province of Ontario to the event as well as prominent Canadian politicians.

We would very much appreciate your support in letting the Community know about this prestigious Canadian Classical Music event.  Please find a poster which is attached.  Not all the sponsor logos are on yet, but we will be getting hard copies next week with them on.

Sincerely,

Volunteer Opportunity

Thunder Bay is hosting the National Music Festival competition this year! The final stage of over two years of preparation is coming to a close.  All systems are a GO!  The last detail needed to ensure the smooth running of this event is to have volunteer support at the event sites. Are you able to give any of your time to help on August 4th and 5th?

You will have the opportunity to view excellent youth talent.  The competitors are the "Cream of the Crop".  They have won their local city festivals and gone on to compete and win their provincial festivals.  They are now coming to Thunder Bay for the National Festival Competition.

The competitions will take place on the campus of the Lakehead University in the Music Department building.   -A free meal will be offered to anyone who does two shifts in a row! - Competition times on the both days will be:

1) 9 AM - 11:30 AM

2) 1:30 PM - 5 PM

Friday August 4th also has an evening competition:

3) 7 PM - 9 PM

There are currently three positions which are available:

1)   MUSIC CARRIER - Brings the music score from a designated area of the event to the adjudicator.

2)  DOOR ATTENDANT - Keeps the door closed during each performance (is situated inside the competition room).

3)  TICKET AGENT - Monitors the door from outside the competition room (no one may enter during performances) and
                               - Collects the entrance fees from the public  (ticket fees are $5.00).

Your assistance at this event would be greatly appreciated.
Please contact Sheryl Thiel at 473-9101 or bsthiel@shaw.ca as soon as possible to offer your help and for more info.

Friendly Fats...

Avocados, nuts, olives, and seeds -- even if you have high cholesterol, don't give 'em up.

In case you haven't quite gotten the whole fat thing down yet, unsaturated fats are your friends when it comes to lowering bad LDL cholesterol and raising good HDL cholesterol. So if your salad looks a little dull tonight, make your stomach and your arteries happy: Toss in some walnuts, sunflower seeds, or avocado and use a dressing made with olive oil. Then, eat up.

RealAge Benefit: Reducing your total cholesterol to 160 mg/dL or lower can make your RealAge as much as 1 year younger.
