Bits and Pieces from the desk of the Executive Di rector

It is always wonderful to start a New Year, an opportunity to make a fresh start. The programs at PARO Centre aim to assist women and their families, as they strive to develop a sustainable livelihood.  It is our experience that many women today effectively “patch income” from various sources which include operating a business and being employed.  In the next few weeks, I will focus on providing “bits and pieces” on how to not only start your business and find work, but more importantly keep your customers and keep your job.  Let’s start with the:

TEN COMMANDMENTS OF KEEPING YOUR JOB

 (This first appeared in Texas Business Today, 2nd/3rd Quarters 1998 issue. Since then, it has appeared on a lot of company bulletin boards and employee break room walls.)

  1. Be on time, whether it is with showing up for work, returning from breaks, going to meetings, or turning in assignments.

  2. Call in if you know you will be tardy or absent. Most companies treat absences or tardiness without notice much more seriously than simple absence or tardiness.

  3. Try your best; always finish an assignment, as requested, no matter how much you would rather be doing something else.

  4. Anticipate problems and needs of management - your bosses will be grateful.

  5. Show a positive attitude - no one wants to be around someone who is a "downer".

  6. Avoid backstabbing, office gossip, and spreading rumors - remember, what goes around comes around - joining in the office gossip may seem like the easy thing to do, but almost everyone has much more respect for people who do not spread stories around.

  7. Follow the rules. The rules are there to give the greatest number of people the best chance of working together well and getting the job done.

  8. Look for opportunities to serve customers/clients and help coworkers. Those who would be leaders must learn how to serve.

  9. Avoid the impulse to criticize your boss or the company. It is easy to find things wrong with others - it is much harder, but more rewarding, to find constructive ways to deal with problems. Employees who are known for their good attitude and helpful suggestions are the ones most often remembered at performance evaluation and raise review time.

  10. Volunteer for training and new assignments. Take a close look at people in your organization who are "moving up" - chances are, they are the ones who have shown themselves in the past to be willing to do undesirable assignments or take on new duties.

Then, there is always the Golden RuleDo onto others as you would have them do onto you.”

As we start another busy and exciting new year working together . . . my best wishes that 2006 will bring you everything your heart desires, excellent health, glowing happiness, wonderful friends, prosperity, and fabulous food!

The Accelerator

Happy New Year!
This parable is very clever, and useful for all entrepreneurs - especially if you are in the mood to write some resolutions for 2006.  One of them might be joining The Accelerator?

Parable of the Pencil
The pencil maker took the pencil aside just before putting him into the box. There are 5 things you need to know, he told the pencil before I end you out into the world. Always remember them and never forget and you will become the best pencil you can be.

~~~~~~~~
One:
~~~~~~~~
You will be able to do many great things , but only if you allow yourself to be held in someone's hand.

~~~~~~~~
Two:
~~~~~~~~
You will experience a painful sharpening from time to time, but you will need it to become a better pencil.

~~~~~~~~
Three:
~~~~~~~~
You will be able to correct any mistakes you might make.

~~~~~~~~
Four:
~~~~~~~~
The most important part of you will always be what is inside.

~~~~~~~~
Five:
~~~~~~~~
On every surface you are used on , you must leave your mark. No matter what the condition , you must continue to write.

The pencil understood and promised to remember and went into the box with purpose in its heart.

Health Minute

Expect the Best...

A positive attitude about aging can help you embrace health in the years to come.

According to research, older people who expect their health to decline with age may be less likely to try to stay physically active. This lack of exercise may in turn set the stage for illness and decreased energy. Look forward to the years ahead and plan on being active, no matter what your age, to promote health and vitality.

RealAge Benefit: Taking care of your emotional health and well-being can make your RealAge up to 16 years younger.

POSITIVE QUOTE :  "War is now more terrible than at any period in human history."

DAILY MOTIVATION :
F A M I L Y

I  ran into a stranger as he passed by,"  "Oh  excuse me please" was my reply.  He  said, "Please excuse me too; I  was not watching for you.

We  were very polite, this stranger and I.  We  went on our way and we said goodbye.  But  at home a different story is told, How  we treat our loved ones, young and old.

Later  that day, cooking the evening meal, My  son stood beside me very still.  When  I turned, I nearly knocked him down.  "Move  out of the way," I said with a frown.

He  walked away, his little heart broken.  I did not realize how harshly I would spoken.  While  I lay awake in bed,  God's  still small voice came to me and said, "While  dealing with a stranger, common  courtesy you use, but  the family you love, you seem to abuse."

Go  and look on the kitchen floor, You will  find some flowers there by the door.  Those  are the flowers he brought for you.  He  picked them himself: pink, yellow and blue.  He  stood very quietly not to spoil the surprise, you  never saw the tears that filled his little  eyes."

By  this time, I felt very small, And  now my tears began to fall.  I  quietly went and knelt by his bed;  "Wake  up, little one, wake up," I said.   "Are  these the flowers you picked for me?"  He  smiled, "I found 'em, out by the tree.  I  picked 'em because they are pretty like you.  I  knew you would like them, especially the blue."

I  said, "Son, I am very sorry for the way I acted  today; I  should not have yelled at you that way."  He  said, "Oh, Mom, that is okay.  I  love you anyway."  I  said, "Son, I love you too, and  I do like the flowers, especially the blue."

FAMILY

Are  you aware that if we died tomorrow, the company that  we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of days.

But  the family we left behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

And  come to think of it, we pour ourselves more into work than into our own family, an  unwise investment indeed, do not you think?

Have an awesome weekend and Merry Ukrainian Christmas from me to you!!
