 Why Attend?

 Engaging Opening Plenary Speakers

Join acclaimed economist Dr. John Helliwell, keynote speaker at the conference's Opening Plenary on Sustainability, March 16, 8-9:30am .  Considered Canada ’s foremost empirical economist, Professor Helliwell has served as research consultant to the Bank of Canada, the National Bureau of Economic Research in Washington D.C. , the OECD and the Canadian Department of Finance.  A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he has most recently served as Mackenzie King Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard University . He has written extensively on well-being, social capital and globalization, and his recent book, Globalization and Well-Being, won the Donner Prize for best book in Canadian Public Policy.

  Key Policy Forums

Don't miss an opportunity to participate in the building of a policy agenda for creating strong communities in Canada ! The Canadian CED Network is renewing the existing policy framework, and is looking for your participation in identifying what the current priorities are in your communities.  This will be done through the pre-conference Policy Framework Renewal Meeting, Friday morning Policy Plenary on "CED and the Social Economy: Changing the Political Context" and the policy stream of workshops through the conference.  Sessions identified as policy renewal sessions will be the most interactive working sessions.

Plus, the Canadian Women’s CED Council is holding a policy forum on ‘Shaping Public Policy-The Women’s Agenda’ before the conference on March 15, 11:30-3pm , with economist and media commentator Armine Yalnizyan.

NUGGETS from ARTISTS

It seems that the word "creativity" sends chills up many of our spines, bringing back ugly memories of childhood disasters with paints and construction paper.  Hanging out with artistic people can be intimidating, especially when you can't even draw a straight line.

Give yourself "permission" to let go of those old thoughts, and understand that your brain has matured and can accomplish much more than it did in the 3rd Grade!  In fact, drawing even simple lines and arrows unlocks your right brain.  You can solve problems in a different way!

Thanks to Compass Webworks owner and digital artist Carol Cooper for  this Top Ten List:

10 Signs That You've Given Yourself Permission to be a Creative Artist

  1. The first words out of your mouth when someone asks "and what do you do?" are "I'm a songwriter/artist/sculptor/writer, etc.".
  2. You work steadily at your craft, whether it's working on or re-working pieces or promoting your work.
  3. You teach your loved ones to treat your art seriously.
  4. The materials and resources that you need to create with are part of your budget and are planned expenses every month.
  5. You're committed to your learning, growth and development, participating in artists groups and discussion forums and seeking out mentorship and coaching.
  6. You don't let mistakes or criticism stop you from taking your next steps.
  7. You're building the resources you need to support yourself financially, emotionally and spiritually.
  8. You're conscious of your physical lifestyle habits and choose the ones that won't interfere with your creative work.
  9. You find opportunities to pass on your knowledge and support wherever possible, to someone who's had less experience than you have.
  10. You consistently say no to requests for your time, energy and commitment that will take you away from your creative work.

The Accelerator invites all artists, who are women in northern Ontario, and committed to growing their business to apply for the program. It's flexible, adaptable, and oh so interesting!  Call Maggie at 807 625 0328 or maggiem@paro.ca for information.

Health Minute

Laugh for Better Blood Vessels...

Laugh your way to better blood vessel function by watching a funny flick.

Laughter relaxes blood vessels and increases blood flow -- the exact opposite of what your blood vessels do when you are stressed. In a small study of healthy men and women with normal blood pressure, watching a funny movie increased blood flow by about 22 percent. If funny movies aren't your style, spend time with the people who tickle your funny bone.

RealAge Benefit: Laughing often can make your RealAge up to 8 years younger.

One Flaw In Women

Women have strengths that amaze men.

They bear hardships and they carry burdens, but they hold happiness, love and joy.

They smile when they want to scream.  They sing when they want to cry.

They cry when they are happy and laugh when they are nervous.

They fight for what they believe in.

 They stand up to injustice.

They don't take "no" for an answer when they believe there is a better solution.

They go without so their family can have.

They go to the doctor with a frightened friend.

 They love unconditionally.

They cry when their children excel and cheer when their friends get awards.

They are happy when they hear about a birth or a wedding.

Their hearts break when a friend dies.

They grieve at the loss of a family member, yet they are strong when they think there is no strength left.

They know that a hug and a kiss can heal a broken heart.

Women come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

They'll drive, fly, walk, run or e-mail you to show how much they care about you.

The heart of a woman is what makes the world keep turning.

They bring joy, hope and love.

 They have compassion and ideas.

They give moral support to their family and friends.

Women have vital things to say and everything to give.

HOWEVER, IF THERE IS ONE FLAW IN WOMEN, IT IS THAT THEY FORGET THEIR WORTH.

Until next week, have a great weekend!!
