Fueling Connections

Beautiful, colourful Fall is approaching and everyone is getting back into the rhythm of the coming season, and that includes PARO!

Look for the PARO Centre for Women’s Enterprise Info rmation Centre at the Annual Nipigon Fall Fishing Festival Trade Show, during the long weekend of September 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  This is your personal invitation to come over and meet me, Sandra Wiggins.  I’d be pleased to meet you and answer any questions you may have about the PARO organization and about the Northern Opportunities for Women or “NOW” Program, part of our regional outreach initiative with PARO on Wheels.

PARO on Wheels is also “gearing up” with workshops, presentations and opportunities for Women in other areas of   Northwestern Ontario .

During our next PARO on Wheels trip, the clearly marked silver PARO on Wheels van is scheduled to arrive in Atikokan on September 5th.

Along the route, our other scheduled stops are:

·         Fort Frances on September 5th

·         Kenora on September 6th

·         Dryden on September 7th

More details to come. Contact and let us know your particular needs, and ideas for workshops and events. Your input is important.

Some of the topics, we have planned over the next couple of months are:

  • Exploring Your Entrepreneurial Potential
  • Feasibility Studies
  • Evaluating Your Market
  • Managing Your Operations, and much more.

Laura Diamond, the NOW Regional Coordinator, and Bobby Jo Chenier, one of our business experts,  have just returned from our Easterly Route where they met with interesting women and community partners in White River and Wawa. This was their first time in those communities and they were most impressed. Look for more information on workshops and counselling opportunities in these areas in the future.  If you live in these communities, we invite you to visit our website at www.paro.ca , e-mail or call us on our toll free number and we will match your request with someone who can help you.

An Interesting Resource for You. . .

The Income Security Advocacy Centre  works with and on behalf of low income communities in Ontario to address issues of income security and poverty. The Centre initiates and conducts test case and Charter litigation, law reform and community development related to federal and provincial income security programs such as Ontario Works, the Ontario Disability Support Program, Employment Insurance and the Canada Pension Plan. Find out more about this important Centre, who recently held workshops in Thunder Bay , by visiting http://www.incomesecurity.org/index.html

Women Helping Women

Hi Entrepreneurs:

In continuing along the same idea with learning to be more assertive in the workplace, here is a formula you can follow at a moment’s notice to help you confront someone who has said or done something that you do not like.  It is called the W.I.N. Formula (Assertiveness Training Techniques) where you are encouraged to express your reaction but not to humiliate or demean the other person.

W – stands for WHEN – Talk about the behaviour that you don’t like such as,  “When you don’t call me and arrive late for an appointment…”

I – stands for I -  I feel… (express the feeling or thought) such as, “I feel annoyed that I have spent a lot of time rushing and hurrying to get ready…”

N – stands for NEED – specifically mention what you want to change such as, “I need you to call and let me know when you are going to be late.”

In order to be able to make these W.I.N. statements, we need to be aware of how we are feeling and to be able to express the feelings in words.  Here are some examples:

Blaming:

“You” Statement  - “You make me so mad.”

“I” Statements -  “I feel angry when you ….”    OR    “I have chosen to let it bother me when you …

Judging or labeling:

“You” Statement - “You are an inconsiderate, hostile, arrogant creep!”

“I” Statements - “I feel betrayed when you criticize me in front of others.”

Accusing:

“You” Statement - “You don’t give a damn about me!”

“I” Statements  -  “I feel neglected when you avoid me.”

Ordering:

“You” Statement - “You shut up!”

“I” Statements  -  “I feel annoyed when you call me names and make fun of me.”

Questioning:

“You” Statement - Why did you do that?  I feel like slapping your face.”

“I” Statements  -  “I really feel insecure about our relationship when you flirt.”

Arguing:

“You” Statement -  “You don’t know what you are talking about.”

“I” Statements  -  “I feel convinced it is this way.”

Sarcasm:

“You” Statement - “Of course, you are an expert!”

“I” Statements  -  “I would like you a lot more if you were a bit more humble.”

Disapproval:

“You” Statement -  “You are terrible.”

“I” Statements  -  “I feel crushed when you seem only interested in spending my money.”

Threatening:

“You” Statement -  “You had better…”

“I” Statements  -  “I’d like to be helpful to you.”

Analyzing:

“You” Statement -  “You can’t stand to leave your mother!”

“I” Statements  -  “I’m disappointed that you are so reluctant to leave…”

(adapted partly from Johnson, 1981)

I hope some of this makes some sense to you but it does require the hard work of really trying to figure out how you are feeling.  Sometimes, it is easier just to blame someone else.  So keep working on getting those “I statements” working for you. I’m quite sure we will make mediators out of all of you, yet! Talk to you next week.

 Cheers,

 Loretta McGregor

Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

Watching your calorie consumption can do more than slim you down, it can ease the ravages of aging, according to a University of Florida study.

Well, at least, it does with rats.

In the study, one group of rats ate as much as they wanted and did not exercise, while another group exercised lightly and were fed less than if allowed to have their fill.

Old sedentary rats that ate until they were full had increased levels of harmful oxidizing and inflammatory molecules in the liver associated with cell damage caused by aging. Meanwhile, aging rats that exercised and consumed a calorie-restricted diet showed a decrease in these liver molecules.

"This suggests that even slight moderation in intake of calories and a moderate exercise program is beneficial to a key organ such as the liver, which shows significant signs of dysfunction in aging process," said Christiaan Leeuwenburgh, associate professor of aging and geriatric research at the UF College of Medicine.

UF scientists found that feeding rats just eight per cent fewer calories a day and moderately increasing the animals' activity extended their average lifespan and overturned the negative effects of cellular aging on liver function. An eight per cent reduction is the equivalent of a few hundred calories in an average human diet and moderate exercise is equivalent to taking a short walk. - Compiled by Jim Gibson, Times Colonist

How are you “aging? Are you being nice to yourself?  CHOOSE healthy wholesome foods (been to the Farmer’s Market?), EAT the correct number of servings in proper portion sizes (we don’t NEED so much food) and MOVE more (are you getting up 45 minutes earlier to get in some exercise?)!

Make it an excellent week! Get up and get going!

If you haven’t already seen it, you should check out the art exhibit of Norval Morrisseau at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery right now.   Norval Morrisseau is considered the greatest aboriginal artist of all time and this exhibit was organized by the National Gallery of Canada.  This is your opportunity to see it here in Tbay rather than having to travel to Toronto or Ottawa.  At one point during his career, he exhibited in France and both Picasso and Chagal went to see his exhibit!  So don’t miss out…

The exhibit closes on September 3, so you don’t have much time left!  Plus, you can support our local gallery!

The Age Less Diet...

Cutting calories may slow down the aging clock as well as peel off pounds.

A labful of evidence has shown that feeding animals a healthy but low-cal diet for the long-term delays aging and increases lifespan. But suggesting this diet works in humans has been controversial, with a capital C, and difficult to study. A research team managed to test it and found that the same life-extending mechanisms that work in animals may occur in humans, too. Moral: Eat light, live longer. Bonus: You can throw out your fat jeans.

RealAge Benefit: Eating a diverse diet that is low in calories and high in nutrients can make your RealAge as much as 4 years younger.

POSITIVE QUOTE :  "There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face."

                                - Ben Williams

DAILY MOTIVATION :  Recently I overheard a mother and daughter in their last moments together at the airport. They had announced the departure.

Standing near the security gate, they hugged and  the mother said, "I love you and I wish you enough."

The daughter replied, "Mom, our life together has  been more than enough. Your love is all I ever needed. I wish you enough, too, Mom."

They kissed and the daughter left. The mother walked over to the window where I was seated. Standing there I could see she wanted and needed to cry.

I tried not to intrude on her privacy but she welcomed me in by asking, "Did you ever say good-bye to someone knowing it would  be forever?".

"Yes, I have," I replied. "Forgive me for asking,  but why is this a forever good-bye "?

"I am old and she lives so far away. I have challenges ahead and the reality is - the next trip back will be for my funeral,"   she said.

"When you were saying good-bye, I heard you say, 'I wish you enough.'  is - the next trip back will be for my funeral," she said.

May I ask what that means?".

She began to smile. "That's a wish that has been handed down from other generations. My parents used to say it to everyone."

She paused a moment and looked up as if trying to remember it in detail and she smiled even more.

"When we said , 'I wish you enough', we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things  to sustain them."

Then turning toward me, she shared the following  as if she were reciting it from memory.

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun more I wish you enough pain so that the smallest joys in life appear much bigger.

I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.

I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.

I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good-bye.

I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive

She then began to cry and walked away.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person.
