Fueling Connections

Watch for Paro on Wheels August 22nd through 24th travelling our Easterly Route. For the first time, we plan to visit White River on August 23rd in our new PARO on Wheels van which has easy to spot signage. We would like to get aquianted with the community of White River and are looking for participants and partners so we can help provide a “one stop shop” during our regular visits to your area. The PARO on Wheels van is our  virtual office, bringing you Business Experts to help women with their business endeavours, and information to link you to services that could be helpful in your personal life.  PARO’s mission is to provide programs and services designed to increase the economic independence and self-sufficiency of women and their families. Along the route, our other scheduled stops are: Nipigon on August 22nd from 11am to 12noon to meet with one of our regional PARO Circles, Terrace Bay on August 22nd from 2pm to 3pm at the Employment Centre,  Marathon, August 23rd   to meet with participants for one on one counseling,  and  Longlac and Geraldton on August 24th   to touch base with our community partners. If you have a business idea,  are thinking of starting a business, or are already in business, our experts can help you with practical information geared to your community, including: feasibility studies, business plan development,  access to funders for start up loans and Peer Lending Circle development. Make an appointment today to speak to us.  You may be surprised at the potential you really have and how PARO can help make it happen!

There are a lot of new resources being developed through various local and regional agencies and government services. PARO, through this article and our website, will be providing links and summaries of areas that may be helpful or of interest to you. One source that you may find very useful is “The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC)”, a newly created agency, working to protect and educate consumers in the area of financial services. The FCAC, provides you with information and links to keep you up to date and help you be an informed financial consumer. The “Consumer Section” is designed to help you learn about consumer protection and your rights. Use their “Resource Centre” to help you obtain consumer education material offered by a range of organizations. Find out how to make a complaint about a financial institution, and read consumer alerts, tips and warnings to help protect your money and interests. You will also find a section on “The New Federal Banking Regulations” which will help you understand and use your new banking rights. The site also has tips and quizzes for the various areas mentioned and for mortgages.  Go to http://www.fcac-acfc.gc.ca/eng/default.asp to find out more.

We are pleased to let you know that another Peer Lending Circle is in the works in the region. Consider this unique way to attain small business loans, in stages, to help you get started, and to benefit from networkworking and supporting each other. Contact Sandra Wiggins or Laura Diamond to find out how you can benefit from participating in this time proven, successful PARO business support.

To help you plan to attend our sessions in the coming months, PARO on Wheels travels our Westerly Route near the first week of each month and our Easterly route the third week of each month.  By mid September, we will be embarking on a comprehensive advertising and marketing campaign so you are aware, well in advance, of workshops will be in your area available for you to attend. Please remember that one on one sessions to discuss particular aspects of your business idea, plan or growth are always available through our Business Experts. Just let us know when would be a good time to meet by contacting us here at PARO Place , through e mail or our toll free number or come to see us when we are in your area. We try to be as flexible as our travel schedule allows, because it is all about you! Women from surrounding communities are always welcome and we invite you to  bring a friend or tell someone you think might benefit from our expertise and connections!

For more information on the upcoming workshops, to schedule a counseling session or if you have input to help us meet your needs, please contact Bobby Jo Chenier , bobbyjo@paro.ca, specializing in Business Development from the idea stage, business plans, and financing; Deborah Poole-Hofmann, specializing in marketing, who can be contacted at the PARO office, Lisa Thomson at lthomson@paro.ca providing individual and group counseling and support in all areas of business development including the formation of the business plan is a resource for women wishing to secure employment in their own communities. Women Helping women

Hi Ladies:

Don’t forget to keep those e-mails coming in with hints and suggestions that you have found work for you with difficult customers.

Here’s a few more pointers that can possibly make your life a little less complicated and your interactions with difficult people a little more enjoyable.

Negative Assertion

 •Acknowledge your fault or error

 •Apologize once

•Acknowledge the effect of your action on the critic

 •Make amends, if possible

 such as:

“You spelled Mr. Smythe’s name incorrectly.”

“Oh, I see I did.  I’ll correct it immediately. I know Mr. Smythe is an important customer.”

 Negative Inquiry

•Used in coping with manipulative criticism

•Ask clarifying questions of a critic in order to prompt him/her to be direct in stating his position

•When the real issue is out in the open, it may be possible to reach a workable compromise

Handling Criticism

•Listen to the criticism, not the implied message, but the exact message

•Sort it out before responding, paraphrase if necessary

•Become aware of non-verbal messages (eyes, hands, feet, stance)

•Acknowledge the other person’s feelings, error/fault (without having to apologize)

•Respond Assertively – use fogging/negative assertion  (That’s possible/ You could be right)

“It was careless of you to leave the file out overnight.”

“Yes, it was careless.  I’ll certainly try to take more care in the future

“You really are stupid to have left that file out.”

“I’d like to discuss this with you for a moment privately.”

“I can understand your frustration.  It was careless of  me to leave the file out.  However, I’d appreciate it if you would tell me in private and also drop the name calling.”

 OR

“I don’t understand what the problem is.  What happened with the files? Give me some details.”

“I disagree.  I find I’m quite organized and get my work done.  However, if there has been a mistake and you want to discuss some changes, I’m available”

•Ask for Feedback - Use Negative Inquiry

“What is it about this …  that is unsatisfactory?”

•Boundaries – this states our position and tells others how we expect to be treated

•Clarify –use the criticism as a source for gathering information to explore the criticism and then, to problem solve

•Be Agreeing - you learn to become more comfortable with negative feedback

•Disagree -  diffuse aggressive statements, establish limits and reinforce our right to set priorities.

You learn to say to yourself  “I’m not perfect, but I’m OK”  You cut down on non-productive criticism.

Connecting You to a Fit and healthy Lifestyle...

It’s almost lunchtime~!!

Do you crave pasta, bread and pizza?

Cravings once thought to “all in your mind” are actually triggered by changes in brain chemistry. Today we know that cravings are linked to the brain’s release of serotonin, a natural chemical that induces a sense of calm and well-being.

High carb foods such as bread and pasta stimulate the production of serotonin, leaving you pleasantly drowsy and relaxed. Now you know why you may find yourself yearning for an afternoon nap if you overdo it on the carbs at noon hour!

You can slough off that midday slump if you balance lunchtime carbohydrates with low-fat, high proteins such as lean fish, chicken, beans or lentils – combine it with a salad (dressing on the side) and a huge glass of water.

You’ll feel energetic for the rest of the afternoon – you’ll make it an excellent day and you’ll be ready to get up and get going!

All About YOU:  Sound Sleep Advice...

Want to sleep like a teenager during summer break? Try these tips from the RealAge doctors.

Get on a schedule. Your body clock runs best when, like a baby, you get yourself on a regular sleep schedule. So aim to get up at about the same time every day -- whether you have a full day of work or a full day of cartoons ahead of you. On weekends, try to rise within an hour of the time you get up during the week. More . . .

RealAge Benefit: Getting 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night can make your RealAge as much as 3 years younger.

DAILY MOTIVATION :  Go the Extra Mile by Giving Extra Service

Once when my daughters were very young, I took them to a fast food restaurant for a carry-out dinner. Back home I discovered that everything was not correct and some items were missing. So I packed up the girls and drove back to the restaurant.

As I approached the counter, the person who had filled my order was about to wait on me again. I laid the order on the counter and she asked, "Sir, can I help you?" I said, "No, you have done enough for today. I prefer to talk to your manager."

About 30 seconds later the store manager appeared.
As I unloaded on this young man, he stood there patiently and listened to what I had to say. When I finally shut up, he looked me in the eye and said,

"Sir, I am very sorry and understand how you must feel.  Recently we have had some trouble with the person who filled your order and we are working with her to help her understand the importance of filling orders correctly. If you have a few minutes I would like to completely refill your order and I would like to get you a soft drink while we are refilling your order."

Within three minutes he appeared with our corrected order and he apologized in depth for the delay and inconvenience. He looked at me again and offered to refund the purchase price of my order and told me that it was not the cost of the order but establishing and maintaining a happy business relationship that was important. This was a young man who would go the extra mile by giving extra service.

To go the extra mile, we have to develop an attitude that says, "I am going to do this for others unconditionally because of how good it makes me feel inside."

Make a list of how you have gone the extra mile for others.  As you complete the list, reflect on how it has made you feel. If you hold the door open for someone else expecting them to say "Thank you," you will probably set yourself up for disappointment.
However, if you hold the door open because it makes you feel good to go the extra mile for somebody else, you will come out feeling on top of the world. It is your state of mind and the attitude that you develop toward serving others that makes the difference. By going the extra mile, you will feel the wind at your back urging you forward.
