Cooling,
Quieting: Circles "Imagine
your most recent experience in a conflicted situation. Most likely,
people were arguing their position, not listening, raising their
voices, acting out, doing power plays–in essence, acting
aggressively. Nothing positive ever results from this continued
conflict, yet we stay in it. Now imagine what might have been
possible if someone had intervened with a process to lessen the
drama, to cool down the situation. This first stage does just that,
by using an ancient, pacifying form, the circle. The
circle is the shape that cools, quiets, pacifies (makes peaceful).
It is the form of equality, the most common and enduring form of
human meeting. Circles have been found from about 500,000 years ago
as early human ancestors sat around fires, trying to get warm. To
pacify a conflict, you have to move into a circle (or a number of
small circles.) As soon as you sit in this form it becomes clear
that everyone will have a chance to speak. Things quiet down. Anyone
who persists in being dramatic or loud in a circle soon looks like a
fool. Circles create soothing space, where even reticent people can
realize that their voice is welcome. As the drama drains, people
will still speak passionately, but more quietly and earnestly. There
are many benefits to this process of listening. The first is that
good listeners are created as people feel listened to. Listening
is a reciprocal process–we become more attentive to others if
they have attended to us. We are often surprised when people truly
listen to us. Their unexpected acceptance encourages us to listen
better. The
second benefit is that listening brings people together. You can
see this happening physically in a circle. As people quiet down
and get more engaged, they lean in. The circle becomes tighter.
The room gets quieter, the volume decreases substantially, yet the
intensity of listening is palpable. And
as we listen, we develop greater awareness that each of us is
human, struggling with life’s challenges. One adage describes
this: "You can’t hate someone whose story you
know." We may never agree on an issue, or share the
same values, but as soon as we realize there’s a person behind
the position, we become more open to them, less reactive." PARO's
strength is The Circle. The circle of support, friendship,
help. The circle that lets us laugh and cry, grow and be
challenged together. Where two or more gather, there the
circle lives. There all can be respected and successful. From
circle to circle, Roz For

Forget Your Worries... A more carefree attitude may help keep your mind young. Chronic worry was linked
to an increased risk of cognitive decline in a recent study. Obsessive
worriers had more than double the risk of decline compared to their more
carefree peers. Kick worries to the curb by writing them down in a journal or
talking them out with people you love. Also, work on decisive plans of action
for worries that won't go away.

"One
must have the adventurous daring to accept oneself as a bundle
of possibilities and undertake the most interesting game in
the world -- making the most of one's best." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~* POSITIVE QUOTE : "Believe, Expect, See and Think the BEST"
Do you remember? Poised poolside, shivering in fear in the heat of the July day. Scrawny legs, knees bent, and a fixed smile, quickly turning to a frozen symbol of courage as you stand, about to take your first plunge into the community pool. Alone, trying to be brave in front of the line of an impatient and eager peer group who has already forgotten their first plunge, and only jeer when the new kid takes time to think about it. Thoughts come fast now: "Can I hold my breath?" "Will it hurt or be cold?" "Is it like anything else I have ever done?" "Will anyone catch me?" Too late to turn back now! The small body catapults through the air, and for that eternal millisecond, the heart beats wildly as those little feet long for the safety of the warm concrete. Courage is now a fact, as a loud "Splash" announces, "I did it!" Nobody but you knows that it was worth all the fear, the waiting and the dares, which led to the summit of joy you finally experienced. Before the glow fades...you have got to go again. Three feet to the water is a time for a twist and shout as your confidence shows through triumphant. Summer passes and moments past seem far away, but graduation to new challenges does occur. By Labor Day, a plunge from the six-foot board into ten feet of water does not even get a nod from the gallery. Independence finally declared, fear has fallen to the powerful force of "Go For It." Can you remember? We all encounter new situations which, at the outset, require that strong first effort. You may relive that success all of your life as new challenges beg to be conquered with no one to coax and no one to cheer. Anticipation of that same feeling becomes a bridge to the next unknown. To choose success means playing in the game, rather than sitting on the bench. Failures become a way of learning . . . not a way of life. History is filled with the names of the heroes and heroines who persevered through winning attitudes. They are sports figures, scientists, politicians and "plain folks" who "Go For It." Can you think of Teddy Roosevelt and not visualize this attitude? Or what about Jim Thorpe, from a little Indian college, who rewrote records in every sport he had an opportunity to try. George Washington Carver lit the lamp of hope in every heart through his brilliant "Go For It" life. Henry Ford made the impossible dream more real, as did Madame Curie. The list continues, a gallery filled with names too numerous to mention. Without the Wright Brothers "Going For It," the steps of such later heroes as Neal Armstrong could have never been planted on lunar soil. All of these men and women refused to accept failure as the close of business. Failure only opens new doors. By giving 100 percent, their impossible dreams became reality. A commitment to doing, does it. The desire to try underlies all of life's efforts. Persistence heals the wounds of discouragement and failure, as glory eventually comes to those who choose to "Go For It." By Donald J. Brun Irby F. Stewart * Reminder - Friday, March 25th is a holiday. If you have submissions for the PARO Link, please send them in by March 23rd -12 Noon Until next week, have a fab weekend, LORI |
