The
Business of Learning If
you've been through any of the This
takes practice and determination. It also means we have to
listen, and watch how others respond. A
visual
person is likely to say “I
see” or “That looks right.”
An auditory
person is likely to say “I
hear you” or “That sounds right.” A
kinesthetic
person is more likely to say “I’ve
got it” or “That feels right .”
A
free 5 minute inventory of styles is located at http://tinyurl.com/5j4da
(just copy and paste into your browser) or http://www.new-oceans.co.uk/new/lsdi.htm
When
you read your results, you'll find out more about how you see the
world through your most preferred set of lenses. Take the time
to read about the other styles as well. The more you know
yourself, and respect others, the more successful your business will
be! Yours

Family is
Business
Northwestern
Ontario is the home of many long-time family businesses.
I was going to name a few, but decided instead to challenge
each of you to go on a treasure hunt. Find a family
business - whether it's a photographer, or a corner store, a
gas station, dress shop - and take a good look around.
Talk to one of the generations about why they are successful -
what are the ingredients of businesses which stand the test of
time and withstand the ebbs and flows of trendy products?
Theoretically,
Harvard Business Review states that Family Businesses possess:
Continuity:
Pursuing the dream. Our long-lived FBs commit enduringly
and passionately to a mission—to do something important
exceptionally well. They invest deeply and for the long run in
the competencies needed to attain that mission. And because
the company is the vehicle for achieving their dream, families
strive to ensure corporate health and continuity, exercising
careful stewardship over resources and encouraging long
executive apprenticeships and tenures. Short-term tactics and
quarterly earnings are furthest from their minds.
Community: Uniting the tribe. To realize their missions, thriving FBs often insist on building a cohesive, clanlike team. They embrace strong values that rally people around what is important, socialize staff to assure that these values will prevail, and often pamper employees to elicit loyalty, initiative, and collaboration. Bureaucratic rules and financial incentives are secondary. Connection: Being good neighbors. Many great FBs cherish enduring, open-ended, mutually beneficial relationships with business partners, customers, and the larger society. These relationships vastly exceed the time span, scope, and potential of episodic market or contractual transactions. Command: Acting and adapting with freedom. FB leaders desire the discretion to act independently—quickly and in original ways—often to renew or adapt the firm. They typically work with an empowered top team whose members are similarly free to communicate openly and make decisions. (Author: Where does FAMILY fit into your business plan? Yours may be a sole proprietorship...where do your partner, your mom, your kids - fit into the equation? Are your relationships benefitting or suffering because you have a business? The ACCELERATOR welcomes family businesses and those of you struggling to balance your dreams with your responsibilities! We recognize that relationships also have a place on your "Assets" charts. Sounds of Slumber... You may be able to tune into a better night's sleep with a bit of music. Depending on the type,
music can be stimulating or sedating. In a study of people between the ages of
60 and 83, soft tunes at bedtime helped the study participants relax into
better slumber. Also, the participants logged more hours of snooze time and
functioned better the next day when they had soothing tunes playing in the
background at bedtime.
