The Accelerator

The Best of Blizzards...Let's talk about the weather

Weather has a way of interfering with our lifestyles, whether it's the blizzard forecast (again) for this weekend, or a mammoth disaster like the tsunami.  One of the 5 Assets which we highlight in The Accelerator program is "PERSONAL ASSETS" - everything from confidence building to spirituality, and taking time for nurturing ourselves.   Instead of trying to pack more productivity into our lives when the dump of snow arrives, try unpacking time out just for you.  Use the weather to take a few hours without an agenda.

A colleague of mine, Pat Katz, writes a weekly e-newsletter...all about PAUSING.  Here's a sample for you to enjoy, with a reminder to "pause".

REFLECTION:
The news coverage of the recent tsunami disaster is heart wrenching. The accompanying relief efforts and the generosity of the people
on this planet are heart warming. Taken together, they make me grateful just to be alive.

How is your happiness quotient these days? Martin Seligman, one of the lead researchers in positive psychology, has identified three pieces to the happiness puzzle. The first is pleasure - joy, fun, laughs, smiles. The second piece is engagement - how deeply involved we are with other people, our work, and our interests. The final piece is meaning - our ability to use our individual strengths to serve a larger purpose. As it turns out, the one that matters least is the pursuit of pleasure. So much for our endless efforts at distraction - movies, TV, fine foods, etc.

So, if you want to raise your happiness quotient, what's the best way to more pleasure, engagement and meaning? Turns out one of the most powerful routes is the practice of tracking gratitude.  Research at the University of California reveals that taking time to notice and record those things for which we are thankful increases life satisfaction. It also improves physical health and lifts energy levels.

ACTION:
Try pausing to focus on those things that you appreciate at the end of a visit, the end of a meeting, or the end of a day - at work or at home. Identify three things you are grateful for each time you ask that question, and watch your happiness meter rise.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."

- Melody Beattie

Three Weeks Into 2005

The past 21 days have flown by in  a flurry of activity...from our 10th Anniversary Celebrations and AGM (outstanding!), to the first Accelerator Group Session (energetic!), to hunkering down with paperwork, meetings, administration and funding proposals.  I haven't had much time to read, or think, or even have a cup of coffee...but I have seen some of the aftermath of the Tsunami.  What would I have done without the help of staff, volunteers and family support?

So this column will be short. This paragraph keeps us in focus. Sometimes, less is more.   What's important?

People and appreciation for each other are most important.

"Our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet.  We all  breathe the same air. We cherish our children's future. We are all mortal."

- John F. Kennedy

With wishes for all of this for all of you,

~Roz

Juice For The Tooth...

Certain tart beverages could be a boon to your smile.

Compounds in red cranberry juice appear to keep bacteria from sticking to teeth, which could thwart plaque formation and tooth decay, a recent study suggests. Stick to low-sugar or diet varieties to avoid the dental damage that can be caused by consuming too many sugary treats.

RealAge Benefit: Eating a diverse diet that includes 4 servings of fruit per day can make your RealAge as much as 4 years younger.

Weekly Inspiration

"Time management is a myth. You don't manage time. You manage priorities...and activities. No matter what you do, the best you can do is spend time...you can't even save time...everything else is illusory."

POSITIVE QUOTE :  "Intellect is the quality that makes us different from animals."

                            - Anonymous

DAILY MOTIVATION :  Rules for Being Human...

1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it will be yours for the entire period on earth.  But, it can become a Temple of God.

2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called life. Each day in this school you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or think them irrelevant and stupid.

3. There are mistakes as well as lessons. Growth is a process of trial and error, experimentation. The "failed" experiments are as much a part of the process as the experiment that ultimately "works."

4. A lesson is repeated until learned. A lessons will be presented to you in various forms until you have learned it. When you have learned it, you can then go to the next lesson.

5. Learning lessons does not end. There is no part of life that does not contain its lessons. If you are alive, there are lessons to be learned.

6. "There" is no better than "here."  When you are "there" has become a "here" you will simply obtain another "there" that will again, look better than "here.

7. Others can be mirrors for you. You cannot love or hate something about another person unless it reflects to you something you love or hate about yourself.

8. What you do with your life is up to you. You have opportunities, tools and resources God has given you.  What you do with them is up to you. The choice is yours.
