New Year's (re)Solutions?

What are the main reasons why most of our new year resolutions fail?

a. People have competing commitments that pull them in opposite directions and cause them to spend a great deal of energy attempting to satisfy each.   Examples: "I am going to lose 20lbs but I love to eat and drink"...or..."I am going to start a new business but I like the  security of the paycheck I get in my present job."

b. Most people don't develop the support systems necessary to overcome the powerful and dynamic urge to stay the same.  Support equals untapped energy.

c. They don't give their emotional brain enough time and energy to relearn deeply ingrained habits!  By developing and following a plan, you can follow through on your resolution through personal determination, practice, repetition and the support of others.

Why do most have to reach a crisis point before they realize it's time for a change?  Start small -  when you are not in crisis!  Release the energy spent in worry  and transform it into focused action.

PARO Accelerator Program

POWER TOOLS:  THE ACCELERATOR

Got the New Year's "itch to change" aspects of your assets?  Think about your goals with three different time frames"  NOW, NEAR and FAR.  "Just Do It!" works well for "NOW" decisions, when time is of the essence.

JUST DO IT!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In making decisions there are times when you have to JUST DO IT. Now when you JUST DO IT that does not mean that you JUST JUMP IN WITHOUT THINKING!  in order to make a JUST DO IT decision here are a few things to remember:
J - JUSTIFY why the decision is important to you.
U - UNDERSTAND the results and outcomes ahead of time.
S - STOP and consider all possibilities and pitfalls of the decision.
T - TRUST YOURSELF and have courage to move forward.
D - DON'T DECIDE it is OK to NOT make a decision.
O - ORDERLY. If you do move forward make sure you plan.
I - INVOLVE OTHERS that your decision will have an impact on.
T - TITANIC. Remember the Titanic...even with the best plans and decisions there can be icebergs along the way.
Bits & Pieces for Busy Businesses
By Rosalind Lockyer , Executive Director
 Thinking about the influence of media on our families lately?  I was intrigued by this "good news" review of "Love Actually" written by colleague Paul Born of Tamarack.
“General opinion is starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed – but I don’t see that – seems that love is everywhere.  Love, actually, is all around.”
If you are looking for a heart-warming movie with a twist, Love Actually is it. A hopeful film, starring Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson, this movie follows the lives of several couples and families over the holidays. Culminating on Christmas Eve, it is a film of hope, friendship and love.
What I love most about the film is that it shows love, in all its modern forms, as hopeful in a world in which violence, fear and hatred dominate the media. It encourages us to think about the small things, people meeting in unexpected ways, reaching out to others as friends, family and lovers.
I have spent a lot of time in airports. Consumed with getting from point A to point B, I seldom looked around to see those coming and going. But since watching this film, that’s changed forever. Watching people say good-bye and say hello to friends, family, and newcomers has made the airport a study of hope and joy for me. The final scenes in this film are precious and make a subtle, everlasting statement."
Helping and caring for each other was a primary principal in developing PARO 10 years ago. It still drives our daily work each day.
Hope to see you at PARO AGM and 10th Anniversary Celebrations, DaVinci Centre, January 11th.
Wishing you pleasant days in 2005,
~Roz
               Simple Meditations
The negative effects of stress, worry, fear and anxiety upon our health has for many years concerned modern society. In this, the fastest paced, most stressed period that humanity has experienced, it is critical for us to be aware of the strain we are placing upon our bodies just to keep up.
Meditation is listening. Listening not for words or sentences but intuitions. We are very complex beings with trillions of physical functions, not to mention the multitude of mental and spiritual dimensions we each possess. From time to time, we need to hear what our body, our mind and our soul are saying to us. Our health - physical, mental and spiritual - absolutely soars when we take the time to listen.
"There are two big forces at work, external and internal. We have very little control over external forces such as tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, disasters, illness and pain. What really matters is the internal force. How do I respond to those disasters? Over that I have complete control."
POSITIVE QUOTE :
"We must not give only what we have, we must give what we are."
                                        Cardinal Mercia
"Work and pleasure should be alternated, one after the other; they fill our lives with joy, though not every work and every pleasure can do this."
Did You Know That...
Drinking two glasses of Gatorade can relieve headache pain almost immediately; without the unpleasant side effects caused by traditional  "pain relievers."
 Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns?  Before you head to the drugstore for a high-priced inhaler filled with mysterious chemicals, try chewing on a couple of curiously strong Altoids peppermints. They will clear up your stuffed nose.
Achy muscles from a bout of the flu? Mix 1 Tablespoon of horseradish in a cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil, for instant relief for aching muscles.
Sore Throat? Just mix 1/4 cup of vinegar with 1/4 cup of honey and take 1 tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
Cure urinary tract infections with Alka-Seltzer. Just dissolve two tablets in a glass of water and drink it at the onset of the symptoms.  Alka-Seltzer begins eliminating urinary tract infections almost instantly even though the product has never been advertised for this use.
 Eliminate puffiness under your eyes...All you need is a dab of Preparation H, carefully rubbed into the skin, avoiding the eyes. The hemorrhoid ointment acts as a vasoconstrictor, relieving the swelling instantly.
Honey remedy for skin blemishes... Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a band-aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight.
 Listerine therapy for toenail fungus... Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails looking healthy again.
 Easy eyeglass protection... To prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a small drop of Maybelline Crystal Clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.
 Coca-Cola cure for rust... Forget those expensive rust removers. Just saturate an abrasive sponge with Coca Cola and scrub the rust stain. The phosphoric acid in the coke is what gets the job done. (Does not say much for your stomach!)
 Cleaning liquid that doubles as bug killer...If menacing bees, wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets get in your home and you cannot find the insecticide, try a spray of Formula 409. Insects drop to the ground instantly.
Smart splinter remover... just pour a drop of Elmer's Glue all over the splinter, let dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
Hunt's Tomato Paste boil cure...cover the boil with Hunt's Tomato Paste as a compress. The acids from the tomatoes soothe the pain and bring the boil to a head.
Balm for broken blisters...To disinfect a broken blister, dab on a few drops of Listerine... a powerful antiseptic.
Heinz vinegar to heal bruises...Soak a cotton ball in white vinegar and apply it to the bruise for 1 hour. The vinegar reduces the blueness and speeds up the healing process.
Kill fleas instantly. Dawn dish washing liquid does the trick. Add a few drops to your dog's bath and shampoo the animal thoroughly. Rinse well to avoid skin irritations. Goodbye fleas.
Eliminate ear mites... All it takes is a few drops of Wesson corn oil in your cat's ear. Massage it in, then clean with a cotton ball. Repeat daily for 3 days. The oil soothes the cat's skin, smothers the mites, and accelerates healing.
Vaseline cure for hair balls..... To prevent troublesome hair balls, apply a dollop of Vaseline petroleum jelly to your cat's nose. The cat will lick off the jelly, lubricating any hair in its stomach so it can pass easily through the digestive system.
Quaker Oats for fast pain relief.... It is not just for breakfast anymore! Mix 2 cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup of water in a bowl and warm in the microwave for 1 minute, cool slightly, and apply the mixture to your hands for soothing relief  from arthritis pain.
DAILY MOTIVATION:  FAILURE: Your Stepping Stone to Success
There once was a story told about a manager within the IBM Corporation  who had made a tremendous mistake which cost the company a million dollars. After the mistake was discovered, the president called the manager into his office. The manager said, "Sir, I know that I am a failure and I do not blame you for firing me."
The president looked him right in the eye and said, "Why should I fire you? I am sure you learned a great deal from your failure and besides, I have got a million bucks tied up in you!"
In Dr. Robert  Schuller 's book, Success Is Never Ending, Failure Is Never, he asks: "What great thing in life would you attempt if you knew it were impossible to fail?"
What a terrific question! We learn at a very early age how embarrassing and painful it is to fail. We hear the word failure multiple times every day and we compete with others to the point where someone has to lose. Failing is a tremendous part of everyone's life and happens frequently in most successful people's lives. It is not important how many times we fail, but what we learn from the failing experience and the attitude we develop towards it.
Although fear of failing is very powerful, we are scripted to expect it.  As a manager, I found that some salespeople had a strong fear of success linked to a fear of failing. They would actually shut their production down in the last quarter of the year. When asked why they were slacking off, they would reply, "If I blow the numbers out this year, you and the company will expect a lot more from me next year." Also, I would hear, "Because I was number one this year, I am sure you will expect that of me again next year." But truly successful people confront their fear of success and learn from their failures as well.
Learning from failure is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. As you are challenged on a daily basis to achieve your goals, keep in mind how important it is to learn from your experiences in the process. Focus on the outcome that you  want, and develop the attitude that you will achieve it over a period of time. When something goes wrong, do not ask why.
Simply look for the reason it happened and you can learn from it to become a better person. It is simply a matter of time and learning how you can approach your challenge from a different perspective to get the result that you want.
Always look at your failures as stepping stones to success and not as obstacles. Remember that your future is only as bright as your mind is open.
